Sony's suggested as much before, but now always-online has definitively been ruled out for PlayStation 4."Did we consider it? No, we didn't consider it," Sony's affable Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Worldwide Studios, told GameInformer magazine (read by Gaming Everything). He seems pretty happy about all this.

"The main reason being that many countries don't have robust internet connections. It makes sense for people to have internet connections to play online games, but for offline games there are many countries that we saw do not really have robust internet."Back when PlayStation 4 was revealed,Shuhei Yoshida told Eurogamer that "oh yes, yes, you can go offline totally" - "You can play offline, but you may want to keep it connected."Very good, very good - but what will Microsoft opt for? For months, it looked like the next Xbox would require a constant internet connection, and we've heard things behind the scenes that back this up.Just this week, however, an internal Microsoft document slipped out revealing that the next Xbox apparently won't require a constant internet connection for single-player games. The truth we should find out on 21st May, when Microsoft formally unveils the next Xbox. We'll be there, ringside in Redmond, delivering a blow-by-blow account of everything that goes down.

Sony has sent out invitations to its Playstation E3 2013 press event, confirming it will join Microsoft in showing off its wares a day ahead of the industry expo in Los Angeles.
The conference takes place on June 10th at 6pm Pacific, just hours after Microsoft’s event takes place at 10am that morning. While the firm didn’t go into details, it will likely show off a mixed bag of upcoming titles for PS4, PS3 and Vita.
Sony livestreamed their showcase in 2012, but no word yet on whether the company plans to do so again this year.
Nintendo, the other member of the big three, announced it would be bowing out of the pre-E3 festivities – instead saving the would-be reveals for its Nintendo Direct events.

What can we learn from that remarkable day in March 2001, when Sega killed off the Dreamcast?
    Sony chief executive Kaz Hirai
    In an
    interview with The Guardian
(published in 2008 but still illuminating in 2013), the former Sega of America chief Peter Moore gives insight into, among many matters, the difficulties in being beholden to a parent company."We [Sega of America] knew we could win," he said."We had a tremendous 18 months. The Dreamcast was on fire [in the US]. We really thought that we could do it. But then we had a target from Japan that said - and I can't remember the exact figures - but we had to make N hundreds of millions of dollars by the holiday season and shift N millions of units of hardware, otherwise we just couldn't sustain the business."Moore's appraisal is a common one: The competitive (even thriving) company is bound to the performance of its parent company. This is why the current financial position of both Microsoft and Sony is crucial in determining the approach for the Next Xbox and PlayStation 4.Last month I met with a well respected and connected industry executive who believed Microsoft will continue to throw large wads of cash at the Xbox division until it wins the war. While that may seem a tad exaggerated (I'm sure it'll be a different story if sales nosedive), there is one thing we can take for certain: There will be further Xbox exclusives from third parties (timed or otherwise) during next gen, simply because Microsoft can afford such luxuries and is certain that Sony cannot. There was a once famous (and unverified) rumour that Microsoft paid Take Two as much as $75 million to ensure GTA IV wasn't a PS3 exclusive, and to secure the game's DLC as a timed exclusive on 360.However ludicrous its price tag, the deal was an unequivocal success for Microsoft. Look at it this way: When San Andreas was released for Xbox, in March 2005, Sony announced the game had already sold over 12 million units on PS2. In the first two months of sales in the US, the game sold less than 500,000 copies for Xbox (it didn't chart the next month).
Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer [Image: Venturebeat (cc)]
Compare this to March 2009, when publisher Take-Two was asked how well GTA IV sold on the Xbox 360 compared to the PS3. Lainie Goldstein, the firm's chief financial officer, said the split was "about 50/50".This is a remarkable shift in sales momentum, regardless of however much Microsoft lost upfront because of it, and encouraged a remorseless mandate to secure more exclusive terms on major third-party franchises, from Call of Duty to Skyrim. Those who say you can't buy success clearly don't know much about the Xbox team in Redmond. Microsoft has a clear strategy to buy Sony's market as rapidly and brutally as possible. There will of course be accountability guidelines in place to ensure the Xbox team spend responsibly, but I'm sure the goal is to acquire PlayStation fans, however unprofitable that may be at first.Sony's approach could hardly be any more polarised. While Microsoft made $6 billion profit in its latest quarter (on top of another $6.4 billion in the quarter prior), Sony's four-year string of historic net losses had terrified its investors. In fact, the corporation's $6.4 billion loss for fiscal 2012 was marked down as the firm's worst ever year since it was founded in 1946. The tragic numbers were announced along with a plan to shed 10,000 jobs, axe entire divisions and appoint a new CEO (Kaz Hirai) to turn the oil tanker around. Many have cited Hirai's position at the top as a good omen for PlayStation. After all, he is a games man. Yet Hirai knows that, with Sony having lost a staggering $9.4 billion in the past four years, the absolute priority is to turn a profit. When Hirai outlined Sony's future in April 2012, he said the sprawling business will focus on three pillars going forwards: mobiles, digital imaging and games. Everything else - including the TV business - will be left behind. Both Steve Ballmer and Kaz Hirai are battling for the same market from opposite ends of the spectrum. The Microsoft chief can afford to take expensive risks like its (unpopular) Surface tablet, while the Sony boss must reign in the spending and report a string of profits each year. This is why indie devs are a key asset for Sony. The services of Jonathan Blow and Markus Persson aren't expensive in comparison to Rockstar, but they all have the potential to make millions for PlayStation. The plan, though still fairly discreet and nuanced, is showing signs of success. It's why we heard those Sony-fuelled claims that indie developers were focusing on the PS4 during GDC, and that the console is better for the self-publishing dev than any other company out there.Who will win next gen? Key to finding that out is asking yourself another question - what's more important these days; exclusive blockbusters or exclusive indies?

PS4’s launch line-up will be stronger than any previous PlayStation launch, lead system architect Mark Cerny has stated.Speaking to Gamasutra, Cerny explained some of the new hardware’s systems in detail and said that because PS4 has more accessible PC-style architecture, it’ll be simple for developers to port their games to the system – and that means a surfeit of launch software.“The launch line-up for PlayStation 4 – though I unfortunately can’t give the title count – is going to be stronger than any prior PlayStation hardware. And that’s a result of that familiarity,” said Cerny. It takes “weeks, not months” to port a game engine from the PC to the PlayStation 4, added Cerny. He went on to explain how Sony’s Play-Go tech works, which will allow PS4 owners to download games as they’re being played.“So, what we do as the game accesses the Blu-ray disc, is we take any data that was accessed and we put it on the hard drive,” said Cerny. “And if then if there is idle time, we go ahead and copy the remaining data to the hard drive. And what that means is after an hour or two, the game is on the hard drive, and you have access, you have dramatically quicker loading… And you have the ability to do some truly high-speed streaming.”There’s plenty more technical detail in the full interview on Gamasutra. We recently published an interview with Michael Denny on the five years’ planning that led up to the PS4 reveal, and revealed the origins of PS4′s Share button. You can find out how Evolution Studios influenced the design of PS4′s DualShock 4 pad and why the new console is more than a high-end PC, according to Guerrilla Games, through the links.

DualShock 4’s Share button was pitched to SCE bosses by Sony Santa Monica creative director Nathan Gary, Shuhei Yoshida has revealed. As part of a far reaching interview on PS4’s creation – in which he also explained why Knack was revealed first at PlayStation Meeting – Sony’s president of Worldwide Studios recalled that the new pad’s headline social feature was pitched after months of discussion about PS4′s social features and implemented into the new DualShock design almost immediately.“After the core hardware, the CPU and GPU, had been decided the project shifted to designing and discussing what should be the user experience of people who be playing games on PS4,” Yoshida told us. “So we formed the cross-functional groups of people from SCEI hardware group and Worldwide Studios and Sony network services teams to meet every month, almost. And Mark [Cerny] was heavily involved and leading some discussions. And the idea of sharing and seamless integration with social networks, that was heavily discussed.”“I think it was [creative director] Nathan Gary in Santa Monica studios who suggested it: how about adding a dedicated button on the controller so that everybody can just press that button to share? He was helping out the external development, heavily involved in helping the development of Journey and Unfinished Swan at Santa Monica Studios.”“So Nathan put together a Powerpoint and pitched in this Share button idea,” Yoshida added. “And we all went, that’s a brilliant idea! So it was a pretty quick decision after he suggested it and I’m sure he’s pretty proud of his contribution. That was after many months of discussion of how people should be using the PS4 system and sharing was one of the central experiences we wanted to include in the system’s development.”You can read more from Yoshida and firstparty studios Guerrila and Evolution in Edge magazine, on sale now. PS4 could launch at a lower price than its predecessor the PS3.
Admittedly, the PS3 launched in the UK at an eye-watering £425. Launching PS4 above that would be ‘brave’ to say the least. But with the new console packing plenty of tech, just how low can we expect it to go?
“We listen and learn and take the judgement from every console launch we ever have and we have to be informed by what the strengths of our PlayStation 3 system have been, but also the challenges of that,” Sony Worldwide Studios VP Michael Denny told Edge.
“We want a system that can reach as broad a gaming audience as possible but whilst being a system that’s deep, connected, rich and immersive and is going to give a very focused and differentiated experience than anything else that’s out there.
“We’ve got lots of information yet to give out on PlayStation 4. The initial announcement phase that we’re in now is just to explain the vision to everybody. Part of that vision is we have created a console absolutely focused on gamers – and we want that to be gamers in the broadest sense as well. I think to some extent I can ask you to draw your own conclusions.”
Nintendo’s Wii U Premium launched £299 and has struggled to gain traction in the UK. PS4 will of course target a largely different demographic – one that Sony hopes has more in the way of disposable income.
The safest bet is Sony launching a number of SKUs, quite possibly two – an entry-level machine and a deluxe version. Expect more in the way of storage and accessories with the high-end SKU.

Asda anticipates that the UK PS4 release date will fall in 2013 and is now taking pre-orders for the console.
The Walmart-owned chain says it's the only supermarket currently offering a pre-order service for the system. You can reserve one now by putting down a £20 deposit. The console is "set to hit UK stores at the end of this year", claims a press release sent out this morning, although Asda's pre-order terms and conditions note that this could change.
They read: "The current expected date of release made by Sony is Christmas 2013. Asda make no Guarantees that this is correct or will not change and Asda shall not be held responsible if Sony change or delay the release date of the Sony PlayStation 4 in the UK and or limit stock."
Sony revealed PS4 in February, when it confirmed a PS4 release date of "holiday 2013" in at least one of Japan, Europe and the US.
Earlier this month, GameStop executive vice president Michael Hogan said Sony is planning a global PS4 release date in 2013.

Revealing Mark Cerny's Knack first during PS4 unveiling an intentional decision to show off diversity

Sony would hate to see all of the games developed for the PS4 as first-person shooters or action-adventure titles, Sony’s worldwide studios president has said.
Speaking to Edge, Shuhei Yoshida said Sony made the intentional decision to show Mark Cerny’s latest game Knack first during its PS4 unveiling in February.

He said that while a plethora of people are interested in triple-A blockbusters and photorealistic titles, they were not the only kind of games players can enjoy.
“It was pretty intentional,” said Yoshida.
“Mark’s idea was like ‘what about [a] Crash Bandicoot for PS4?’ when he suggested the concept of Knack. We were like yeah we hate to see all the PS4 games being FPS or action-adventure or very photorealistic, you know big-budget blockbuster games. And you know people like these games but these are not the only kinds of games that people can have fun with.”

Sony told developers console would ship with 4GB RAM, says Just Add Water CEO

Sony kept all but its closest studios in the dark about its decision to give the PS4 8GB GDDR5 RAM, says Just Add Water CEO Stewart Gilray.
Gilray's studio already had their dev kit, and was working on a secret title for the new console, but didn't find out about the real specs until the unveiling on February 20th.

"We were told [PS4] was 4GB originally and we first knew it had 8GBs when Mark said at the event's stage, 'And it has 8GB of memory.' We'd had kits at that point for a good while," Gilray told Videogamer.
While it is likely that "a couple of really close first-parties" knew about the 8GBs before the event, Gliray says that "most third-parties, were in the dark and happy with 4GB.
One of the benefits of the additional memory is that Sony has fenced in its system memory so that developers don't have to worry about it.

Sony’s PS4 will be released in October and cost £300. Or at least that’s what a reporter for The Sun believes.
Both statements are dropped into the paper’s interview with Sony’s Andrew House, although neither are attributed to the exec. Indeed, The Sun simply says PS4 is “believed to be coming out in October” and that “experts believe [PS4] could retail for about £300”.
Both statements could be true. Or just one of them. Or neither of them. Indeed, is there even such a thing as empirical truth, as Hume once asked?
We’re going a bit off track here I think.
Anyhow, elsewhere in the interview House reiterates that while Sony is obviously looking to service the hardcore gaming community with its new machine, it isn’t forgetting about the wider market.
“We are not going down the route of making the console pink of course,” he stated. “I think the key is to have people — and increasingly women — with different sensibilities creating different games. It is not all about shoot ’em up games. The key is getting games developers — who are going to make the next Angry Birds — excited about the PS4. And they are.”
£5 on Sony releasing a pink PS4 by 2015, anyone?
