    Nintendo Switch console sales have jumped in the UK as Pokémon Sword and Shield become the fastest-selling Switch game so far.
    Retail data shared with GamesIndustry.biz states that Switch hardware sales rose more than 30% during the release of Pokémon Sword and Shield. The spike also coincides with increased retail activity around Switch consoles, with hardware sales spiking 75% the week previously. Overall, almost 90,000 Switch machines have been sold in the UK so far this month.
    Interestingly, it isn't the new special edition Pokémon Sword and Shield Switch Lite that is driving sales, but actually the 'normal' Switch console with the improved battery life.

    Pokémon Sword and Shield are finally here, and quite fittingly for the variation's monikers this time around, their arrival has come with conflict.
    Sword and Shield comprise the first mainline entries in the long-running series to debut on a home console (settle down, "Switch is actually a handheld/console hybrid" pedants), and as such there are elevated (and differing) expectations around it. Some players have been upset that it lacks the "National Pokédex" that let users import hundreds of Pokémon from previous games into new installments during the franchise's run as a portable exclusive franchise. Others simply expected the series to take a larger leap forward. Plenty of others seem perfectly happy with what Sword and Shield are offering.
    Those varying expectations can be seen reflected in the first wave of reviews. In her 9.3 out of 10 review for IGN, Casey DeFreitas seems perfectly pleased with how the game turned out.
    "With every new game in this 23-year-old series, changes big and small are always made, but I've never been willing to declare the latest entry the new gold standard for Pokémon because they've consistently been a balance of better and worse," DeFreitas said. "But the first mainline game on the Switch has changed that: though there is still no 'perfect Pokémon game,' the 40-plus hours I've spent with Sword and Shield have left me comfortable with calling them the best Pokémon games I have ever played - and I've played 'em all."

      It's been a while since I started working and playing around with homebrew replacing HOME menu in February. After several months of RE, new approaches and a lot of work, I'm glad to present the result of all my work related to HOME menu + homebrew:

      uLaunch is a custom, open-source replacement/reimplementation for Nintendo Switch's HOME menu (qlaunch), extending it with amazing, homebrew-orienteed functionality!

      uLaunch is a very ambitious project, consisting on two custom library applets, a custom system application and a custom system applet, in order to replace the console's HOME menu with a custom, homebrew-orienteed one.

      Features

      List of HOME menu features uLaunch has:
      • Proper launching and foreground management: launch, suspend and close titles and applets
      • Proper general channel handling (some of it might be not implemented): sleep, shutdown, reboot, HOME menu press detection...
      • Settings:
        • Show connected WiFi network's name
        • Open connection applet in case user wants to change network settings
        • Change console's language and show active one
        • Change console's nickname and show current one

      • User features:
        • Allow creating user on the startup menu
        • Show user's page (in order to edit nickname, icon, friends...)

      List of not (yet) implemented HOME menu features:

      Disclaimer

      Homebrew-as-application 'flog' takeover

      uLaunch allows you to launch homebrew as an application, taking advantage of the system's 'flog' built-in application title, which was stubbed but not removed, thus it's content can be overriden via LayeredFS and launched.

      Since launching this title should be impossible, it might involve ban risk. uLaunch has this option disabled by default, so enable and use it use it at your own risk. Always make youre you're safe from bans (by using tools like 90DNS) before using uLaunch to avoid any possible risks.

      IMPORTANT!
      Note that this is the first release of the project, and while it was made to be as stable and complete as possible, it is far from being fully ready, so expect some unimplemented functionality or sudden bugs or small issues.

    Nintendo's latest financial results show growth across the board, boosted in part by the launch of the Switch Lite.
    For the six months ended September 30, 2019, the company reported net sales of ?443.97 billion ($4.1 billion), a year-on-year increase of 14.2%.
    Profits saw bigger boosts with operating profit rising by 53.4% to ?94.2 billion ($869.1 million), and ordinary profit up 32.1% to ?91.9 billion ($847.8 million).
    Total hardware sales reached 6.93 million units during the six-month period, up 36.7% when compared to the year before. Naturally the bulk of this was driven by the regular model of the Switch, which sold 4.98 million units, but the new Switch lite managed to shift 1.95 million units -- despite only launching 11 days before the end of the fiscal half.
    This brings the lifetime sales for Switch up to 41.67 million units, with 246.01 million games sold.
    Software sales for H1 reached 58.49 million units (up 38.8% year-on-year), with all three of Nintendo's major new releases selling more than two million units apiece.
    Super Mario Maker 2 was the leader with 3.93 million units, but Link's Awakening wasn't too far behind with 3.13 million -- all the more impressive given the former was released in June and the latter was released on September 20.
    Fire Emblem: Three Houses also performed well at 2.29 million units, although this was less than the 2.32 million that evergreen hit Mario Kart 8 Deluxe managed.
    Nintendo reports the number of Switch titles to pass one million sales during the financial year, including third-party games, is now up to 11.
    The platform holder also reports digital sales of ?71.6 billion ($660.6 million), up 83% year-on-year. This was attributed to the "steady growth in sales" for downloadable games, plus Nintendo Online Subscriptions.
    There was a rare insight into the company's mobile business, with revenues from its smartphone titles reported as ?19.9 billion ($183.6 million) for the six moths -- an increase of 6.4% year-on-year. Nintendo did not detail how this was split between previously released titles and new releases Mario Kart Tour and Dr Mario World.

    The Nintendo Switch has sold a total of 15 million units in North America alone since its launch in March 2017.
    This number includes both the regular Nintendo Switch as well as the Nintendo Switch Lite, which launched just last month. Unit sales are up over 20% year-to-date as of the end of September.
    A total of 14 Nintendo Switch games have sold over one million units, and four have sold over six million: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Super Mario Odyssey.
    So far, Nintendo has sold nearly 37 million units of Nintendo Switch hardware worldwide by last count (though the company's IR site hasn't been updated with this total since July), and just surpassed 10 million unit sales in Europe earlier this month. Nintendo originally set sales targets for the console at 38 million units by March 2019, but missed its projections at the time.

    Nintendo DS emulation on hacked Switch consoles isn’t anything new and it’s been around for over a year first with DeSmuME-NX and then melonDS. Up till today, melonDS could run some less demanding titles at fullspeed provided you overclocked your Switch to 1.5/1.7GHz but doing this reduced battery life and generated extra heat which would undoubtedly shorten the battery’s lifespan. As a result, the only realistic way to emulate DS games on the Switch was through DraStic on Android but now, that’s changed thanks to catlover007’s work!

    Catlover007 has been working on writing a DS JIT for the Switch for quite a while and now, he’s released the first public build of melonDS with an ARM64 JIT and NEON GPU optimisations. According to the release post, his build of melonDS allows you to run most 2D games at good speeds and even some 3D titles like Pokemon HG without overclocking. While this build provides better performance than other melonDS for Switch releases, it doesn’t have the regular UI so controlling it might be a tad more annoying but it’s certainly doable.
    Shrimptacular on Reddit has tested numerous DS games on this build and he’s confirmed that the following titles work properly:

    • Plants vs Zombies
    • Tetris DS
    • Yoshi’s Island
    • Castlevania Ecclesia
    • Castlevania Portrait
    • Mario Kart DS
    • Metal Slug 7
    • New Super Mario Bros

    fgsfdfgs has released a new version of GZ Doom for the Nintendo Switch

    Changes

    merged latest upstream changes (4.2.1+);
    rebuilt with latest libnx (9.0.0 support).

    Installation and running

    Unzip the attached ZIP file to the switch folder on your SD card.
    Place at least one supported IWAD (e.g. doom2.wad) into gzdoom/iwads/.
    Run GZDoom Launcher from hbmenu.

    Known bugs

    When you exit the game via the Quit option in the menu, something doesn't deinitialize properly and the next homebrew you run will crash, unless you exit and reenter hbmenu.
    Startup takes a while.

    Notes

    Launcher controls:
    D-PAD: navigation
    L/R: change tab
    A: activate option
    B: cancel/exit
    X: reset option
    PLUS: start game
    You can technically place the game into any subfolder in sdmc:/switch/, as long as the gzdoom folder is next to gzdoom_launcher.nro.
    Any custom files (PWADs, PK3s, DEHs, LMPs, whatever) should be placed into the gzdoom/pwads folder.
    The launcher has predefined default profiles for most supported IWADs. You can also add your own profiles by pressing Y on the main tab. Any changes will be saved to gzdoom/launcher.ini.
    The launcher will only detect files in gzdoom/iwads and gzdoom/pwads. You can use the Override RSP file option if you have to load files from other locations.
    Multiplayer does work, however only Switch <=> PC multiplayer has been tested. You can start a netgame from the launcher. Don't forget to change the player number from 1 and read the warning message.
    The IP that's placed in the address field by default is your Switch's local IP, others can use that to connect to it if they're on the same network.
    Only the player that hosts the game needs to set gameplay settings, however everyone has to pick the same set of custom files as the host.
    Fatal errors are logged into error.log. You can also turn on logging in the launcher.

    Nintendo Switch Lite has sold around 13,500 units during its first week on sale in the UK, retailers have told GamesIndustry.biz.
    It's a relatively slow start for the new portable-only Switch, although the console is targeting a more casual user and was not expected to deliver huge week one numbers. By comparison, the 2DS -- a similar stripped back Nintendo handheld released in October 2013 -- sold 200,000 units in just under two months (IHS data), but its sales didn't pick up until the October half-term holiday.
    Retailers speaking to GamesIndustry.biz said it was far too early to draw any conclusions. One senior buyer told us: "Switch Lite was always going to come into its own come Pokémon. It's ideal as a Christmas present, and we expect sales to ratchet up during November and December. Pre-orders for the special Pokémon Switch Lite have been strong."
    Another retail executive added: "Launch week really isn't the point of Switch Lite."

    Nintendo is receiving all manner of compliments for its latest hardware, but special praise must be reserved for its name -- a near perfect paradox. The Switch Lite is, after all, light on pretty much everything that gave the original Switch its name.
    No Joy-Cons for out-of-the-box multiplayer, no kickstand to turn the diminutive screen into something around which friends can gather, and, crucially, no option to hook connect the hardware to a television and move the experience from your hands into the front room. The Switch Lite may be priced at $200 rather than $300, but it loses a lot in the name of reducing costs.
    This is the underlying argument in Kotaku's review, in which Mike Fahey simultaneously lamented what is missing from the Switch Lite while also proclaiming it "one of the finest handheld gaming devices I've ever used." Fahey is not alone in praising the Switch Lite in those terms, but few critics articulate its shortcomings so clearly.
    "'Switch Lacking' would be more accurate, if far less marketable"

    "It still supports near-field communication for Amiibo support, and has a built-in accelerometer and gyroscope for motion control, so not all of the Switch's extra features have been stripped away. 'Switch Lacking' would be more accurate, if far less marketable.
    "If my only desire was to play Switch games in handheld mode, I would choose the Switch Lite over the regular Switch, hands down... But the original does a whole lot of cool stuff the Switch Lite does not do -- stuff I've grown used to, and now feel awkward going without. Removing Joy-Cons to play multiplayer games is a Switch feature I hardly ever use, but when I have, it's led to some pretty magical moments. My gaming is normally a personal thing, but the ability to make it social with the click of my Switch means it doesn't have to be."

    Nintendo continues to use the courts in its efforts to crack down on people selling circumvention devices for its systems. Sir Richard Arnold today ruled in the Switch maker's favor in a High Court of Justice case, granting an injunction requiring the UK's five main internet service providers to block their customers' access to four websites offering "SX Pro" hardware and software to jailbreak the Switch.
    "The injunction sought is necessary to prevent, or at least reduce, substantial damage to NCL [Nintendo Co., Ltd.]," Arnold ruled. "It appears that substantial sales of the circumvention devices have been made in the UK, that substantial quantities of pirated games have been downloaded in the UK and installed on Nintendo Switches using the circumvention devices and that NCL has sustained significant losses as a result."
    Justice Arnold noted that Nintendo has been unable to identify the people running the websites, and cease and desist orders have either been ignored or prompted the sites to change their URLs. Take-down requests sent to the sites' hosting providers were likewise ignored, and while YouTube, Amazon, and ebay have squashed listings regarding these sites and devices upon request, they aren't stopping them from being replaced.
