It's been a good week for Western developers on the notoriously parochial Japanese software chart, with LA Noire and inFamous 2 taking the top two spots.

As detailed by Andriasang, the PlayStation 3 version of Rockstar's detective epic was number one, selling 58,436 in its first week, while Sucker Punch's inFamous 2 sold 33,474 in second.

Bug-blasting sequel Earth Defense Force Insect Armageddon followed in third and fourth on PS3 and Xbox 360 respectively.

The PSP returned to the top of the hardware chart after a couple of weeks playing second fiddle to the 3DS.

Sony's handheld sold 26,373, down from 29,871 last week, while the 3DS shifted 22,943, down from 30,233. The PS3 followed in third and the Wii in fourth.

Zumba Fitness is in its fourth week in a row at number one in the UK software chart. It's also the 505 Games' exercise title's seventh appearance in the top spot since the Wii release at the start of April.

Codemasters' Dirt 3 has climbed to second place, while Transformers: Dark Of The Moon has moved into third, pushing LA Noire into fifth.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops' return to the top ten, up ten places to seventh place, is almost certainly the result of the the Annihilation Map Pack DLC on XBLA. UFC Personal Trainer also climbed from twenty second place to thirteenth.

A quiet week for new releases means no new entries into the top 40.

Nintendo's 3DS has returned to the top of both hardware and software charts in the company's home territory as a rush of new titles in the region dominates sales.

In stark contrast to the sparse UK and US release schedules of summer, eleven of the top twenty software offerings are new to market in Japan this week, although some have been available in the West for some time.

The Media Create figures show the 3DS's adaptation of Tales of the Abyss, originally a PS2 title, continuing the popularity of the series with close to 75,000 domestic sales in week one, putting it comfortably ahead of the PS3 sku of the latest Street Fighter variant. The 360 version of that title also makes it into the top 20 at 12.

Classic shooter port GoldenEye 007 on Wii hits fourth spot with 36,174 downloads. Another classic remake, Ocarina of Time 3D, maintains a healthy chart presence at sixth with 24,190 sales this week.

On a system basis, Sony dominates the chart once more with six games each on PSP and PS3 in the table. Nintendo manages two each for Wii, 3DS and NDS, with Microsoft claiming the last pair for 360.

Hardware sales fail to reflect that position, however, with 3DS inching ahead of PSP with 30,233 sales to Sony's 29,871. PS3 sits just behind that at 26,441 whilst the gap widens before Wii at 12,423. The discontinued PSPgo manages a paltry 7 units.

Did you buy Zone of the Enders just to get at the demo version of Metal Gear Solid 2. Did you summon half your street to join you in a game of TimeSplitters? Wouldn't you have enjoyed your PlayStation 2 games much more if you'd just left them sealed on the shelf? That's the eye-watering achievement collector Ahans76 has achieved, spending the last decade stuffing first edition (only with the Sony hologram attached) titles into a bookcase and steadfastly refusing to open them. In an interview with PlayStation Collecting (hit the source link below) he reveals much about the collection but doesn't mention if he ever opened his PlayStation 3. That would certainly be one way of keeping your credit card secure.

PCSX2 SVN r4791 is released. PCSX2 is an open source PlayStation 2 (PS2) emulator for the Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems. With the most recent versions, many PS2 games are playable (although speed limitations have made play-to-completion tests for many games impractical), and several games are claimed to have full functionality.

Zumba Fitness has retained its position at number one in the UK software chart for a third week, outselling the games in second to fifth places combined despite a five per cent drop in sales.

LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean sits in second, pushing L.A. Noire down to third and FEAR 3 to fourth. Wimbledon week has undoubtedly helped to push Virtua Tennis four up from 20th to fifth.

New entries are sparse in another quiet release week, with Resident Evil 3DS managing a debut at 21. The only other new entry, UFC Personal Trainer from THQ, sits one place below at 22.

Last week's Zelda-fuelled sales bump for the 3DS has proved short-lived, with the PSP regaining its hardware crown in the latest Japanese chart.

As reported by Andrisang, the PSP sold 29,168 units to take the top spot, followed by the 3DS, which was down from 40,649 last week to 27,905.

The PlayStation 3 and Wii both saw modest increases in third and fourth respectively.

On the software side, PlayStation 3 RPG Atelier Meruru: Alchemist of Arland 3 came in first. Last week's number one Little Battle eXperience fell to four, one ahead of Ocarina of Time 3D in its second week on sale.

A few Western-developed titles snuck into the chart – the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 down at 13 and Grand Theft Auto IV Complete Edition at 17.

Former Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) president Andrew House has been made president of Sony Computer Entertainment International (SCEI), with SCEE co-COO Jim Ryan taking House's place.

Current SCEI chairman Akira Sato will retire from the role in August 31, leaving the way for Sony Corp. deputy executive president Kazuo Hirai to take his place and for House to become president of SCEI.

At the same time as the announcement PlayStation creator Ken Kutaragi stepped down as honorary chairman of SCEI, although he still maintains his senior technology advisory role at Sony.

"Since returning to SCE two years ago, I have focused on further expanding our business in the European/PAL territories and regaining our market leadership there," said House.

"I believe there is huge potential for further growth of our business globally, and I’m looking forward to working with everyone in the SCE group and with other groups in Sony to help achieve this potential by pursuing the creation of brand new user experiences."

"I’m confident that the skills and expertise Andy has gained over two decades working for Sony and SCE Group will contribute enormously in leading the PlayStation business and to bring new initiatives in managing the business in the networked era," said Hirari.

"I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the great support from third party game developers and publishers and particularly to the wonderful creators all over the world," said Sato on his retirement.

"Without the great content from a wide spectrum of genres made by third party game developers and publishers, as well as SCE Worldwide Studios, PlayStation would not be where it is now," he added.
