• March 2013 - DCEmu Turns 9 Years Old and Still Going Strong

Its Now March 2013 and DCEmu the Homebrew & Gaming Network is now 9 Years old. I actually started the sites back in 2002 but joined them under the DCEmu name back in 2004 when the site was foremost a Dreamcast Site, since then we have expanded and cover all homebrew scenes as new consoles come into play. To make sure the site gets back to what it does best i have merged the discussion forums and unmerged all the news forums, which for everyone makes for a better reading experiance, no one wants to search for PS2 news on a PS3 merged news forum because it takes ages to find it. Also this month we have launched new sites for PS4, GCW Zero and also an Open Source Handhelds website. Thanks for visiting DCEmu and please join in the discussion and remember if you are a coder then you can upload to our forum instead of using crappy internet upload sites.

Some happy news for the many who've already plunked down their hard earned cash on OUYA -- the Android-based gaming console will be getting streaming gaming courtesy of the folks at OnLive. The prospective console maker broke the news on its Kickstarter page, noting that the experience will also include 30 minute free demos of "nearly every game" in its library, including Ravaged and Darksiders II. Also, some news for those wondering if the other side of the console's controller was a radical departure [see above]. Check out a press release detailing the OnLive partnership after the break. Oh, and for those of you keeping track: the Kickstarter page is currently at a whopping $5.5 million pledged, with a dozen days left.

The Windows Phone 8 SDK has escaped to the wild, and some sifting through the device emulator has dug up elements that Microsoft either skipped or only touched on lightly during the big unveiling in June. The most important addition may be the one customers see the least: backup. A WP7.hu search has the new OS replicating apps, settings and SMS messages in the cloud to prevent disaster, and that new SD card support will let WP8 owners shuffle photos from internal storage to the removable kind for safekeeping. There's also more work on Internet Explorer than we saw before, with MobileTechWorldnoticing that DataSense provides an option for Opera-like remote compression to save that precious cellular bandwidth.
Media fans might have the most to gain. If we go by The Verge, both the Music/Video and Xbox hubs are getting fresh coats of paint -- both to integrate new ventures like Xbox Music as well as to jive more closely with the SmartGlass visual theme. Shutterbugs will like the long-awaited options to crop and rotate their work, pick multiple photos, and unify third-party camera apps under a Lenses concept. There's even more clever features in store, such as a Maps update that finds nearby WiFi hotspots, so head on over to the sources to get a full sense of where Microsoft will be going.

Some of you might be familiar with Sony's earlier struggles to successfully (and in a timely manner) deliver Google's Ice Cream Sandwich to a slew of Xperia handsets. And, as we all know, Android 4.0's no longer the freshest treat around, thus the Walkman maker will now have to answer all the Jelly Beanquestions to come. The first one to do so was a resident Sony mobile expert on the company's UK Facebook page, revealing that the Xperia Arc S and the itty-bitty Xperia Mini Pro won't be receiving the latest and greatest OS from Mountain View. Meanwhile, he also stated there's nothing buttery in the works for the elegant Xperia S, though he did say "ICS should now be approved" for the device. Perhaps this is a sign it's time to start looking for an updgrade, no?

New subscription service offers monthly fee for unlimited gaming on Android tablets
Exent's offering for a monthly 'all-you-can-eat' subscription service has just been released, bringing numerous games to Android tablets. The new model will aim to offer many popular games with all content for a modest fee each month through the GameTanium Mobile platform, something Exent says is unlike anything currently available.
"The GameTanium tablet offering is yet another step in our anytime, anywhere gameplay vision," says Zvi Levgoren, CEO at Exent. "We now offer our world-leading Games on Demand service across all of the platforms necessary to enable games to be played wherever, whenever and however consumers want to play them.
"As a result, the service represents a great opportunity for carriers to engage their customers on a more meaningful and ultimately, more profitable level and for game publishers to drive their games more deeply into players' lives."
Exent hopes to bring together premium titles to help consumers weed out "the overwhelming population of game demos, spam, broken apps and just plain boring games offered in the Android Market."

Retail giant Gamestop is taking a good, long look into reselling digital content, according to CEO Paul Raines.
Speaking in Grapevine, Texas this week, Raines shared his thoughts on his company exploring their options with secondhand digital game sales as the industry continues to trend away from boxed retail.
“It’s very interesting,” Raines told Gamespot. "There are some technologies out there in Europe, and we’ve looked at a couple that are involved.”
Raines made it clear that while the retailer is looking into the business, it’s not something they’re in a huge hurry to dive into.
“We’re interested; it’s not a meaningful business yet. Right now we’re not seeing that as a huge market, but I think we’re on the leading edge. There are a few companies, a few startups, out there that we’ve talked to that are doing this.”
Sales from used boxed games bring in over 25 per cent of Gamestop's total revenue.

Webhallen has today admitted that the prices it listed for the Surface tablet on its online store were indeed fake - and not received from Microsoft.
The retailer had the rumour mill buzzing yesterday after it allegedly lifted the lid on Microsoft's Surface tablet, listing the device from between £650 for the base 32GB model and almost £1,389 for the 128GB Pro edition.
However, the company has now confirmed to blogging site Techie Buzz it has received no such information from Microsoft, and instead hiked up the prices in order to attract potential customers.
Webhallen told Techie Buzz: "Our customers are very interested in pre-ordering these products, so we have set a high preliminary pricing for the lineup so that they may be able to pre-order them,"
"Just to clarify, we have not received any pricing from Microsoft regarding MRSP or purchasing net cost, and any people who have booked the Surface at this high price will of course have their order adjusted before any product is shipped. So we're not going to overcharge anyone for being an early adopter," the retailer continued.
Many initially questioned the huge price difference that would have existed between the Surface and its closest competitors, such as the new iPad.
If Microsoft are looking to compete with - and possibly de-throne Apple within the tablet market - it is widely believed they will need to price their device competitively.
The buzz generated by the news yesterday reflects the sheer amount of interest consumers have in the tablet.
Having already unveiled the Surface under secretive circumstances and remaining tight lipped about the device until now, Microsoft might want to provide prospective buyers with more information soon, if they want to capitalise.

    2. Apple News

While Google's Project Glass is getting all the attention right now, Apple has been toying with a heads-up display since 2006.
In fact, Apple's video glasses project has already been awarded two patents and this week, the US Patent Office published a new patent application from the company. This one regards a future heads-up display that focuses on delivering Retina Display like quality to a smaller display that's powered by a much smaller battery than an iPhone.
Although Apple's patent application presents the image above, bear in mind that it isn't a design patent - if/when the finished product comes to market, there's no chance it will look like that. Can you imagine Jonathan Ive putting his name to that monstrosity?
Finally, Apple also notes in their filing that "other embodiments may take the form of other types of display devices such as television sets, computer monitors, projection systems, and so forth."

Cleverly titled Google Handwrite, the feature allows users to write search terms onto Google's homepage using their fingers.
Google software engineer Rui Ueyama said: "We designed Handwrite to complement rather than replace typing; with the feature enabled, you can still use the keyboard at any time by tapping on the search box."
The feature is available in 27 languages and works on Apple devices running IOS 5 and higher, smartphones running Android 2.3 Gingerbread and higher, and tablets running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and higher.
To get the feature up and running in your mobile browser, tap on Settings at the bottom of the screen and enableHandwrite.
It's still in beta, so to avoid mistakes, Google recommends writing search queries in block capitals.

Fans of Sony's acclaimed racing series Gran Turismo may have to wait until the next console for a fresh outing.
Series designer Kazunori Yamauchi that developer Polyphony Digital is already hard at work on GT6 and has been since GT5 was finally released in 2010.
"We're always aiming for the latest technology and the latest expression," said Yamauchi, according to Andriasang.
The developer also hinted that a Vita version of Gran Turismo could allow gamers to enjoy multiplayer and online modes wherever they go.
"If we were to make it, we'd like to make use of the ability to play anywhere and the ability to use 3G at any time," he said.
