• March 2013 - DCEmu Turns 9 Years Old and Still Going Strong

Its Now March 2013 and DCEmu the Homebrew & Gaming Network is now 9 Years old. I actually started the sites back in 2002 but joined them under the DCEmu name back in 2004 when the site was foremost a Dreamcast Site, since then we have expanded and cover all homebrew scenes as new consoles come into play. To make sure the site gets back to what it does best i have merged the discussion forums and unmerged all the news forums, which for everyone makes for a better reading experiance, no one wants to search for PS2 news on a PS3 merged news forum because it takes ages to find it. Also this month we have launched new sites for PS4, GCW Zero and also an Open Source Handhelds website. Thanks for visiting DCEmu and please join in the discussion and remember if you are a coder then you can upload to our forum instead of using crappy internet upload sites.

Microsoft might be wavering on the well established Metro moniker that it ascribes to its flat, live tile design aesthetic, but that doesn't make it any less pervasive in Windows 8's final build. Care to see? Impatient Windows fans have pilfered a handful of screenshots from Google and Windows Storepreviews, revealing what appears to be the final look for several of Windows 8's apps. Gumshoes at theNeowin forums uncovered fresh previews of the Photos, Mail, Messaging, People, Calendar Xbox music, Xbox video and Xbox SmartGlass applications. Liveside followed up on the forum's findings with a peek at the OS' baked in Bing integration. The camera interface's crop and video playback features make an appearance too, as do the operating system's legacy time wasters: Solitaire, Minesweeper and Mahjong -- slacking off never looked so good. Check them out for yourself in the gallery below, and agonize over how far away October 26th suddenly seems.

Nintendo has emerged victorious in a patent lawsuit filed by Copper Innovations Group.
The suit was first filed back in 2008 and claimed the Wiimote and Wii console infringed on the group’s 1996 patent for a ‘hand held computer input apparatus and method.’
Summary judgment was granted in Nintendo’s favor at the Pittsburgh U.S. District Court, putting an end to the case before the possibility of a jury trial.
"We are very pleased with the court's decision," Nintendo of America's deputy general counsel Richard Medway stated.
"Nintendo has a long history of developing innovative products while respecting the intellectual property rights of others. We also vigorously defend patent lawsuits when we firmly believe that we have not infringed another party's patent, despite the risks that this policy entails. I would like to express our sincere appreciation for the tireless efforts of our legal team."

Future has recruited a new editorial team for its Official Nintendo Magazine.
And the new recruits are currently redesigning the mag and website to coincide with the launch of Wii U.
Former ONM editor Chandra Nair has returned to Future Publishing in the role of editor-in-chief for the firm’s Nintendo projects.
Nintendo Gamer’s associate editor Matthew Castle has assumed the same associate editor role at Official Nintendo, while Jo Skrebels has been appointed as the magazine's staff writer.
“I am delighted the new editorial team has been finalised and am excited to see the brand evolve and develop in the run-up to Wii U launch," said Lee Nutter, the publisher of Official Nintendo Magazine.
"There’s a lot more to come from the ONM brand over the next 12 months and we have a great team in place to deliver it.”
“I am thrilled to have been appointed as Editor-in-Chief of Nintendo Projects and am excited to lead the team in taking the brand forward, in particular introducing the Wii U elements to the magazine itself. It is a really exciting time for Nintendo and I am proud we will be right in the midst of it all,” says Nair.

    2. Playstation Vita News

SCE UK chief Fergal Gara admits he'd love to see Vita selling better, but believes its best months are still to come.
The MD told MCV that with Call of Duty, FIFA, Assassin's Creed and LittleBigPlanet on the way this Christmas, there's every reason to believe the machine's performance will improve as we head towards the crucial peak selling period.
"We would love it to be selling more and we intend to make it sell more and help it sell a lot more," he explained.
"The feedback from many consumers who’ve got their hands on it is positive – so that’s a very good start.
"The key thing for the rest of the year is the key software drive for the console so as we look towards September, LittleBigPlanet, that really is taking the concept on another level because of the Vita functionality. And of course the other key big third party IPs – Call of Duty, FIFA, Assassin’s Creed – will do tremendous things for the Vita. So it’s our job now to take that strength of software and give people more reasons to buy.
"I think we haven’t quite hit the spot with the killer software just yet and I have every reason to think that will happen in the next few months.?
Sony says it will be working alongside the likes of Activision and Ubisoft in order to ensure Creed and Call of Duty are reasons to pick up the high-end handheld.
"Our first and foremost job is to drive install base and those IPs are owned by those guys so we’ll put our arms round them and work collaboratively with both teams to make the best of it," he said.
"You saw an example of how Assassin's Creed may be presented there with the white Vita pack and bundle. That’s an example of how you can take the game and go the extra mile by working together."

FIFA 13 will be amongst the first titles to launch on Wii U this year.
The franchise - which is only beaten by Call of Duty in sales each year – will be update for Wii U to feature GamePad controls. It even features ranked online play for the first time in a FIFA game for a Nintendo console.
The game uses the GamePad to shoot and place free kicks, similar to how Vita's backpad can be used for playing FIFA. It can also be used to quickly changing tactics and players using the touch screen.
Madden NFL 13 will also be a launch game for Wii U.
“We challenged our teams to develop innovations designed specifically for the Wii U, and to create new ways to play that would bring players of all abilities together,” said EA Sports boss Andrew Wilson.
“Our teams have truly delivered creative new football experiences with FIFA 13 and Madden NFL 13 for the Wii U.”

Gamasutra editor Eric Schwarz gives thought to the constantly increasing amount of graphical detail in computer games. He notes how the cues leading the player can be hindered too much if they drown in the surroundings, making it harder for the game to hint whether the player is making progress. Consistent visual language helps to categorize various objects, making their meaning more obvious. Paths through the game world can be difficult to read simply due to dense vegetation. For some cases 'obfuscation through detail' can also actually work really well. Schwarz challenges us to ponder how the amount of detail makes a game either more or less enjoyable.

"The Commodore 64 came out 30 years ago and to celebrate this the BBC went and got two groups of kids to try out an old system, complete with tape drive. Sure to bring a few grins to people who had one of theses old systems. From the article: 'The Commodore's ability to display 16 colours, smoothly scroll graphics and play back music through its superior SID (sound interface device) chip - even while loading programs off tape - helped win over fans, but it did not become the market leader until the late 1980s.'"Last spring a modern version of the C64 was released.

In a twist that reinforces Valve's distaste for Windows 8, it turns out that the Source engine — the 3D engine that powers Half Life 2, Left 4 Dead, and Dota 2 — runs faster on Ubuntu 12.04 and OpenGL (315 fps) than Windows 7 and DirectX/Direct3D (270.6 fps); almost a 20% speed-up. These figures are remarkable, considering Valve has been refining the Source engine's performance under Windows for almost 10 years, while the Valve Linux team has only been working on the Linux port of Source for a few months. Valve attributes the speed-up to the 'underlying efficiency of the [Linux] kernel and OpenGL.' But here's the best bit: Using these new OpenGL optimizations to the Source engine, the OpenGL version of L4D2 on Windows is now faster than the DirectX version (303.4 fps vs. 270.6 fps). If OpenGL is faster, and it has a comparable feature set, and hardware support is excellent... why is Direct3D still the de facto API? With Windows losing its gaming crown and smartphones (OpenGL ES!) gaining in popularity, is it time for an OpenGL revolution?

Here is a telepresence robot that uses an Android device and LEGO NXT parts. [Wolfgang] had an extra phone on hand and decided to put it to good use. The Mindstorm parts make it really easy to produce a small robot, and adding the phone really ups the computing and connectivity options available to him.
The Android device is able to control the NXT bot via Bluetooth. [Wolfgang] didn’t go into detail on that part, but you can get some pointers on the topic from this other Android controlled Mindstorm project. [Wolfgang] wanted the ability to check in at home when he’s travelling. He uses nanohttpd on the Android device to serve up a simple web interface. It uses HTML5 to push a snapshot from the phone’s camera as user feedback, and provides a set of directional arrows which let him drive the bot around.
Obviously this thing is going to run out of juice if he’s away for too long. To combat that problem he included a battery which powers both the NXT parts and the phone. Now he just needs to build an inductive charging station and he’ll really be set.
