In a document from the ongoing Samsung/Apple trial, provided in both English translation and Korean original, Samsung engineers provided a detailed comparison of user interface features in their phone against the iPhone. In almost all cases, the recommendation was to adopt the iPhone's approach. Among other observations, this shows how much work goes into defining the Apple iPhone user experience."Ars has an article on the evidence offered by Apple so far.

Despite its significant user base within enterprises, BlackBerry devices have managed to stay off the radar for malware writers. That may be ending, as four new Zeus-in-the-mobile (Zitmo) samples targeting BlackBerry users in Germany, Spain, and Italy have been found. Zitmo, which hit Android devices back in July 2011, refers to a version of the Zeus malware that specifically targets mobile devices. Denis Maslennikov, a security researcher at Kaspersky Lab, also identified a new Zitmo variant for Android using the same command and control (C&C) numbers as the BlackBerry versions. While previous Android variants have been primitive, the latest .apk dropper, which shows up as an app 'Zertifikat,' looks 'more similar to "classic" Zitmo,' he said. When executed, it displays a message in German that the installation was successful, along with an activation code. The Android sample also included a self-issued certificate that indicates it was developed less than a month ago."

Valve announced today in a press release that they are expanding Steam beyond games and will start to deliver other software. This means that Steam will compete directly with Microsoft's Windows Store and perhaps explains some of Gabe Newell's disdain for Windows 8. The ability to save documents to Steam Cloud space also brings Valve into competition with the likes of Dropbox and Skydrive. According to the press release, 'The Software titles coming to Steam range from creativity to productivity. Many of the launch titles will take advantage of popular Steamworks features, such as easy installation, automatic updating, and the ability to save your work to your personal Steam Cloud space so your files may travel with you.'"

Cevat Yerli warns that tablets are catching up

The industry is long overdue for a new generation of consoles, says Crytek founder Cevat Yerli.
As the specs on tablets climb to ever-more impressive benchmarks, Yerli said consoles could fall behind.

"We can’t comment on or even speculate as to when, or if, the next generation will be announced, Yerli told VG24/7, "but we think that it’s time for the next generation and we think that it’s overdue already."
The Crytek CEO cautioned that further delays could have damaging effects on the console market as a whole, which he thinks is in danger of losing its first choice status for gaming.
"The current generations are drying out and the longer we wait for the next generation of consoles, the higher the likelihood that they could fall behind tablets in terms of being the first thing people reach for when the time comes to play games,” he warned.

Windows GM referring to Autumn update for 360, claims Microsoft

Microsoft has played down claims made by its Windows GM that a new Xbox is underway by claiming the recent reveal was a misunderstanding.
Brian Hall recently referenced the long-rumoured Xbox 720 during an interview with the Verge, stating it would be coming as part of a new wave of products including Windows 8 and Windows Phone.

But a statement from Microsoft has now called the following reports a misunderstanding, and that Hall actually referred to the upcoming Xbox 360 update and a host of new features coming to the console, such as SmartGlass, Games on Windows 8 and Xbox Music.
"The comments to The Verge were not understood in their intended context," read the statement.
"When Brian mentioned a 'new wave of products,' he was referring to the full lineup of products coming later this year from Microsoft, including Windows 8, Office, Windows Phone and of course our fall Xbox update which will bring a host of new consumer experiences like Xbox Music, Videos, Games on Windows 8 and Xbox SmartGlass."

Apple and Google have been at each other's throats for months, only now, it's starting to spill over into their products.
With the latest beta release of iOS6 now available, many have been quick to point out the operating system's new features - as well as those that have been dropped.
From the moment the new OS is installed, one thing is crystal clear; Apple is going through a very public split from Google, and it's had huge implications.
iOS6 has banished the majority of Google's services, most of which, have been a staple feature of users' iPhone home screen's since the device's launch back in 2007.
Here's a rundown of what not to expect in iOS6:
Google MapsApple's outright war with search-engine giant Google starts here, with its removal of the company's maps app, which users have relied on throughout the iPhone's lifespan.Dropping Google Maps was a move widely expect from Apple following its recent acquisition of several mapping companies.Apple's mapping app will introduce a variety of benefits over Google Maps, particularly, its use of layered images for different zoom levels, which means users will no longer have to wait for those pesky blocks of blurriness to load as they take a third wrong turn.It will also introduce 3D buildings and long-requested turn-by-turn voice navigation, meaning users will no longer have to face the uncertainty of their best friend's sub-par navigation skills.
YouTubeWhilst the removal of Google Maps was widely expected, YouTube's disappearance from iOS6 came as more of a shock. The news has split the Apple community, with half lamenting the loss of the app, whilst the other question the need for it. Unlike with Google Maps, Apple doesn't have its own video streaming app to offer, nor does it intend to introduce one. Instead, Google has announced it will be developing its own YouTube iOS app, which will be available for download through Apple's App Store. With its own app, the search giant has promised to provide regular updates and improvements, unlike Apple, who showed the app very little love through the years. It will be interesting to see how this battle between Apple and Google plays out once iOS6 and the heavily rumoured iPhone 5 hits shelves later this year. Will Apple's separation from Google boost its dominance within the smartphone market even further, or will it be its downfall, setting the stage for an impressive comeback from Google and Android?

Thirty years ago, the Commodore 64 was introduced to the world, bringing home computing to a mass audience, and changing my life forever.
Perhaps I exaggerate a little. I was only two when the machine first appeared, and I had started school by the time one first appeared in my home. Nevertheless it has left a big impression on me and countless others from that generation.
It reportedly sold up to 17 million units and dominated the home PC market in the early ‘80s.
We had two machines in my house – my father brought them home one day having swapped them for a broken oven. One worked but was missing keys, whilst the other had a full keyboard but didn’t work.
For many the C64 led to heady world of bedroom coding, where almost anyone could learn some coding and, with a bit of effort, put out some decent games. It was a revelation (and Raspberry Pi is hoping to stimulate something similar today).
For me personally, it helped foster a love of computing and gaming that continues even now.
    DALEY THOMPSON, DESTROYER OF JOYSTICKS
Around 10,000 software titles were created for the machine, one of them Daley Thompson’s Decathlon – otherwise known as the destroyer of hands and joysticks everywhere.
Named for Olympic champion Daley Thompson, who won gold medals in 1980 and 1984 for the UK, it was released in 1984.
Most of the ten events – 100 metres, long jump, shot putt, high jump, 400 meters, 110 hurdles, pole vault, discus, javelin and 1,500 metres – required running, which on the C64 meant waggling the joystick from side to side as quickly as possible.
    It was EXHAUSTING.
You think Mo Farah looked tired after his run? Or that Jessica Ennis was a wee bit wiped out after successfully winning her Heptathlon gold? Think again. Think of Helen French in 1986, desperately trying to win gold, giving it everything she could.
Going on the Decathlon theme, another favourite from the 1980s was rival title Activision's Decathlon. It boasted a two-player option for frantic competition. I'd play against my little brother, only I didn’t have his stamina, and though he was two years younger than me, he’d always win the last, most exhausting race. You’d be throwing that joystick from side to side for what felt like forever, gaining blistered palms along the way (yes, really!), until that moment when I couldn’t take it any more.
I would throw a strop, slam the joystick down and watch with a wry smile as my brother had an agonising wait for my character to cross the finish line before he could be crowned champion.
Ah, those were the days. That was what my Commodore 64 brought me – a true sense of the joy and despair that good gaming, even in a mere 16 colours, can bring.

A brand new peripheral is threatening to eclipse the advances made by technologies such as Microsoft's Kinect.
Called Leap, the small device – which connects via USB and is about the size of a flash drive – is said by its developers to be 200x more accurate than any other motion sensing equipment on the market. It can apparently track movements down to 1/100th of a millimetre.
It can track all ten thumbs and fingers as they interact with a 3D space (up to eight cubic feet in size) established around a user’s PC. It can also track pen movement and does an amazing job of tracking handwriting, as is seen in the video below.
It will support Windows 8 out of the box with Linux compatibility currently “on the agenda”.
Each Leap unit will retail for $69.99, with the limited initial shipments scheduled to become available this winter. Free developer kits are also being offered.

Tech journalist's hacking causes Apple and Amazon to look at their security systems.
Apple has put a 24-hour ban on users changing their Apple ID passwords via calling Apple support after journalist Mat Honan was hacked.
Pictured here, Honan’s iCloud account was hacked on Friday with data wiped from his iPhone, iPad and Macbook.
The hackers also took control of his Twitter account, using it to post racist and homophobic messages.
It’s reported that the hackers used a combination of Amazon’s credit card record keeping system and Apple’s user authentication requirements. These two pieces of information, along with some social engineering, gave the hackers access to the iCloud account.
A statement from Apple read: “We found that our own internal policies were not followed completely.”
