    2. Nintendo 3DS News

Nintendo’s unrelenting critics would have you believe its mascot’s latest handheld outing is ‘Mario by the numbers’. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
The moment 3DS owners start up the single-player mode of New Super Mario Bros 2, they will fall into one of two camps: the stalwart gaming veterans that are unable to resist the challenge of new, intricate and devious side-scrolling levels, or the newcomers taking their first steps onto discovering why many of us spent our childhood surgically attached to our NES and SNES controllers.
There is very little that will shock and surprise anyone that has played a 2D Mario platformer – let alone those that have encountered the NSMB series before – but few will be able to put this title down within the first hour. Time flies past in a blur of smashed blocks, flattened goombas and incinerated piranha plants before you remember your supposed to be indignant that Nintendo has dared to charge you £40 for something you’ve essentially played before.
This is partly once again thanks to the level design. While some may feel that Super Mario 3D Land’s levels felt a little sparse and empty, each one dependent on a single gimmick to coax you towards that all important flagpole, New Super Mario Bros 2’s stages are further proof of Nintendo’s prowess at 2D level design.
Each is packed with secrets: extra lives, the ever-enticing power ups and entire areas that you would never find without straying from the usual left-to-right path. Nothing emphasises this more than the return of the P-wing symbol from NES classic Super Mario Bros 3 – you’ve never found everything a stage has to offer until you’ve flown over it.
But that’s not Nintendo’s priority when it comes to marketing the 3DS blockbuster. The platform holder is instead focusing on the new Coin Rush mode, something that some might think of as a half-arsed attempt at a bonus mode. They would be wrong.
Three randomly selected stages, more coins, 100 seconds on the clock and one life.
On the face of it, Coin Rush comes across as a transparent ploy to eek out a few more gameplay hours by recycling levels wholesale. But instead, it taps into a compulsion that all Mario players have battled since the 1986 original.
We’ve all done it, diverted from our goal to get those five coins just sitting there in the open – fully aware that they accomplish nothing but edge us closer to that next extra life, of which we already have 50.
Throw in a ticking time limit, and those coins become even more tantalising. Do we risk going after them, or press onto the next inevitable batch of plunder? When we get the Coin Block Hat, which spews shiny things the faster we run, do we dash full pelt towards the level’s end, or hang around for those secret stashes?
These questions are not answered with careful strategy but reckless button mashing as you attempt to find that ideal route to bag the most coins before time runs out. The blocks and chasms of each level blur to form racing lines you try to perfect each time, with every death accompanied by the uncontrollable urge to have one more go, one more go, just one more...
And the ability to challenge friends and strangers via StreetPass, where you download the same random assortment of levels they faced, brings out the competitive nature that keeps a cartridge firmly in its slot for months.
New Super Mario Bros 2 arrives on shelves tomorrow, and while many – including your favourite trade site – have questioned its oddly high digital price point of £39.99, there’s no denying the game’s potential to rake it in for Nintendo.
New Super Mario Bros 2 is released in the UK tomorrow. It will, for the first time, be released both at retail and via Nintendo’s digital eShop simultaneously.

    2. Playstation Vita News

Sony used its Gamescom press conference to effectively relaunch its Vita handheld for Christmas.
And as part of the revamp, it will spend more money on marketing Vita this Q4 than it did over the platform’s launch earlier this year.
To improve the console’s slow sales the platform holder will launch a series of bundles featuring the biggest brands in games: Call of Duty, Assassin’s Creed, FIFA, LittleBigPlanet and Need for Speed.

“We’re currently putting the finishing touches to our campaign, and throughout peak we’ll be spending more marketing money than we did during the launch period,” SCE?UK’s senior product manager Ian Vinten explained to MCV.
“Our comprehensive TV plan kicks off in September and will run in key bursts to Christmas, focusing on the new titles. Our first ad will feature FIFA 13 and LittleBigPlanet.
“Having FIFA 13 in our creative is a great example of how we’re engaging with the third-party titles. These games really deliver against the promise of the hardware and are what our consumers have been crying out for.”
Sony called on its own studios to satisfy demands for more Vita content too, unveiling two key titles in Germany:?a new Killzone and new IP from LittleBigPlanet developer Media Molecule called Tearaway.
“History has shown that great quality content drives demand for hardware,” added VP and MD for SCE UK & Ireland Fergal Gara.
“We hope you’ll agree that the outstanding array of software showcased at Gamescom, covering some of the biggest and best franchises, demonstrates our commitment to the platform.
“This strength and depth of software support, in combination with a heavyweight marketing campaign, retail focused bundles and sampling, puts the PS Vita in a very strong position for Christmas and beyond.”

NaturalMotion has revealed that its free-to-play iOS game CSR Racing grossed in excess of $12m in its first month.
Developed by UK studio Boss Alien, the game sees players competing in a succession of drag races. No steering is required – instead, success is determined by the player’s gear changing accuracy.
As well as skill, progress is best made by upgrading your cars – which can of course be purchased. The game also limits the number of races a player can partake in during any given period. Further goes can be purchased for those unwilling to wait.
The game launched on June 28th.
NaturalMotion’s previous iOS titles include Backbreaker Football and Jenga. It is also the creator of the Euphoria engine which, amongst other games, is the heart of titles such as Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption.

PS4 and Xbox 720 do not exist. Got that?
Just because the president of EA Labels Frank Gibeau says he’s seen them, that doesn’t mean they’re real.
"I've seen both of them", he told a Gamescom audience, as reported by GameSpot. "Ten years ago we used to measure our market in terms of 200 million people. Now we are at a billion people playing games and we have a straight line view on two billion.”
But that doesn’t mean they’re real. We think Frank Gibeau is real. But PS4 and Xbox 720 are not real. The developers working on launch games for them are not real. Microsoft and Sony’s hardware developers are not real.
The component manufacturers making the innards ARE real, but the components they are making are NOT. Unless they are currently on the market or installed in existing machines. Then they’re real. But the ones being made for the new consoles aren’t. They’re not real. Understood?
Even when Microsoft talks about the New Xbox, that doesn’t mean it’s real.
PS4 and Xbox 720 are not real until Sony and Microsoft say they’re real, OK? And with new games and new IP being announced for PS3 by Sony on Tuesday, PS4 won’t be real for some time yet.
As far as MCV understands, Xbox 720 won’t be real until some time in Q2 of 2013. Probably around E3.
To be clear, we are currently in a state of unrealness. This unrealness will in an instant transform into realness when an official press statement confirming the real existence of new consoles arrives in your inbox. That won’t happen yet as neither PS4 or Xbox 720 are real.
UPDATE: MCV contacted EA to confirm a couple of points in this story. When asked if Frank Gibeau is real we were told "Frank is definitely real and a great person". So, that's that cleared up. However, when probed on the fictional PS4 and Xbox 720 we were told that EA had no comment. Perhaps it's corporate policy to not comment on fictional devices? The truth is, we're not sure what its policy on fictional devices is. Not that PS4 and Xbox 720 are real, of course.

    2. PS3 News

EA has removed a branded Medal Of Honor: Warfighter tomahawkfrom sale and pulled a series of blog posts from the game's executive producer touting official partnerships with weapons manufacturers.
As we reported yesterday, the blog posts, written by executive producer Greg Goodrich, contained links to each manufacturer's official website, where guns, attachments and tactical accessories could be ordered online and delivered to a local weapons dealer.
While they're still published on the Warfighter site - here's Goodrich on the CS5 sniper rifle by which, remember, he was "blown away" - they can no longer be found using the website's navigation menu.
Also gone is SOG Knives' limited edition Voodoo Hawk, a tomahawk designed for the game and made in real life with Medal Of Honorbranding on the handle. The standard, branding-free edition is still available to pre-order on SOG's site.
Speaking to Eurogamer at Gamescom yesterday, Goodrich confirmed that the posts and tomahawk had been pulled, but insisted his conscience was clear because proceeds from the sale of the Voodoo Hawk had been earmarked for Project Honor, an EA scheme to support the Navy Seal Foundation and the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, which provide support to fallen and wounded members of the military and their families.
"That whole effort, we've been working with these partners because we wanted to be authentic, and we wanted to give back to the communities," he said. "Every one of those partners, none of them paid a dime for product placement - all the money generated went to Project Honor.
"We're making a firstperson shooter and it fits. If we were doingNeed For Speed we'd do something different. If I was doing FIFAit'd be something different. But we're making a firstperson shooter about the warfighter. If we partnered with another brand it wouldn't make sense and it wouldn't be authentic."
Progress, then - of sorts, anyway. Yet Goodrich seems unrepentant - the changes to the campaign have been brought on by the outcry, and there is no admission of wrongdoing whatsoever - and those partnerships with manufacturers are still very much in place.

Microsoft's PR machine has been hard at work over the past few months, trying to explain the numerous improvements Windows 8 has received on the backend. But are there real tangible performance differences compared to Windows 7? TechSpot has grabbed the RTM version of Windows 8, measuring and testing the performance of various aspects of the operating system including: boot up and shutdown times, file copying, encoding, browsing, gaming and some synthetic benchmarks."Lots of other sites are running reviews including: Infoworld, CNET, Computerworld, and Gizmodo, with very mixed opinions.

Mozilla's mobile phone operating system only exists in an early beta form, but Oleg Romashin, a researcher at Nokia, has already got it working on the Raspberry Pi and posted video to prove it. We don't think this indicates any alternate strategy for Nokia if Windows Phone doesn't pan out, but it does show that Firefox OS is portable, and the Pi is capable, and both can be played with — which will please both Mozilla and the Raspberry Pi Foundation. And the Firefox OS work in progress is available for download (direct tarball link)."

I don't usually do 'how-to' postings, and I'll have much more comprehensive discussions of Android 'Jelly Bean' and the Google Nexus 7 tablet later — there are some really fascinating implications to how that ecosystem is developing. But since quite a few people have been asking me if it's possible to use the Wi-Fi-based Nexus 7 as a phone, I thought I'd scribble out this quickie guide. In short, yes, even though the N7 doesn't obviously have phone-related user interfaces, you can use the N7 as a phone for both outgoing and incoming calls via VoIP, and this can be accomplished completely for free via Google Voice accounts.

The Daily Mail has pictures of Apple's new mini connector. The photograph, shared by French tech website nowhereelse.fr, shows two components, one of which is said to be similar to another apparently leaked picture of a part of the new iPhone. As well as the new dock connector, the part also seems to take in the headphone jack and the home button connector for the hotly awaited devices.
