    A new release of ScummVM is ready. This is a thrilling one because we are embracing adventure games as far back as 1976! That’s right, the infamous Colossal Cave Adventure, the very first Interactive Fiction game, is now supported by ScummVM.
    Besides that (and about 1594 other IF games), we now added 3 more game engines and extended another 4, thus adding the following games to the supported list:

    • Blazing Dragons
    • Eye of the Beholder - Sega CD version
    • Griffon Legend
    • Interactive Fiction games
    • Operation Stealth
    • Police Quest: SWAT
    • Prince and the Coward, English translation
    • Ultima IV - Quest of the Avatar
    • Ultima VI - The False Prophet
    • Ultima VIII - Pagan

    As you can see, we continue our exploration into the world of RPGs.
    Other notable changes are: a fully rewritten MorphOS port; a new subsystem for automatic saves present in nearly every engine we support; Right-To-Left display support in our GUI; updated MT-32 emulation code and Discord Rich Presence.
    We now support additional different game versions, and have noticeable improvements to Illusions, Kyra, Lab, Queen, Titanic, Xeen and ZVision engines. There is also improved support for Maniac Mansion, NES and Apple //gs versions. As usual, we continue fixing original SCI script bugs in over 30 games and added Roland D-110 soundtrack support to these games.

    Our new and shiny Android port for ScummVM v2.2.1 is now live on the Google Play Store. After quite a long period of dedicated work from our team developers, and a month of public beta testing by members of our community who helpfully reported quite a few issues for us to address, we are finally ready to give you the stable release for our ScummVM Android app.
    This app has been significantly re-written and tested on modern Android devices, running up to Android 10+. It includes new features which bring it up to speed with the desktop ScummVM application, such as FluidSynth support, Cloud Saves and more localization choices for the UI. Also included is the Local File Server (LAN) feature, whereby your device can act as a temporary file server allowing you to download files (eg. save files and even the config file) or upload new ones (eg. game data) using a web browser from a PC or another client.
    With this release we have resolved a few long standing issues such as:

    • upgrading from previous versions without losing access to your previous configuration and save files
    • folder navigation (based on storage access permission settings)
    • Working special keys on the virtual keyboard (such as F-keys) as well as handling of repeated keys

    Other significant improvements have been made to the interface of the application, such as the ability to choose whether the GUI will feature filtered graphics (bilinear scaling) or not (nearest neighbor scaling), several fixes for the virtual keyboard behavior to make it more responsive and closer emulate the behavior of a physical keyboard, and support for virtual mouse control using the analogue joystick from your controller.
    By upgrading to the new 2.2.1 version you will be able to enjoy support for all the game engines that have been introduced on ScummVM since 2.0.0, such as Blade Runner, Ultima IV, Quest for Glory IV, as well as all the bug fixes and improvements made to the existing ones.

    Sony's latest TV ad for PS5 focuses on the firm's upcoming game launches, GamesIndustry.biz can reveal.
    The ad is the second part of its launch campaign, which debuted last week featuring narration from US rapper Travis Scott. The narration and soundtrack remains the same, but whereas the first featured real world moments of exploration, this one focuses on scenes from upcoming games Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Demon's Souls, Gran Turismo 7, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Returnal, and Horizon: Forbidden West.
    These are all Sony-published games due to launch on PlayStation 5 during its first year. The campaign is part of the firm's efforts to create a "memorable" launch, despite the restrictions created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

    2020 has been a difficult year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and that has been especially true for smaller charities, such as Everyone Can.
    Formerly known as the Aidis Trust, Everyone Can is a national charity that helps disabled people through the use of assistive technology. The charity offers services across the UK, such as one-on-one assessments, which help disabled individuals "control their home environment, communicate, and live their lives with as much ease and independence as possible."
    "We help disabled people to break down barriers through training and assistive technology," says Nikki Jones, fundraising officer for Everyone Can. "Things like communicating -- some disabled people can't do that. They don't have the luxury of being able to talk, turning on the lights in their house, using a PC, using a mobile phone... Anything that their disability holds them back from, we look at ways that technology can help them."
    Although Everyone Can has been around since 1975 -- its first assessment was for a typewriter -- over the last two years it has started putting more of an emphasis on assisting disabled gamers, after recognizing a growing demand for the service. According to the Family Resources Survey 2018/2019, there are 14.1 million disabled people living in the UK -- that's more than one in five. Many of these individuals would like to play video games, but often lack the equipment or adaptive technology to do so. This is where Everyone Can step in.

    Microsoft has shared more on the decisions behind launching its entry-level next-gen console, the Xbox Series S.
    Launching yesterday alongside the more powerful Series X, the $299/£249 digital-only console is not too far off the now discontinued Xbox One X in terms of performance, albeit with next-gen features like Quick Resume and the faster loading times enable by a solid state drive.
    Given the smaller differences in technology, Microsoft could have retained the Xbox One X as its entry-level device, but system architect Andrew Goossen told Digital Foundry why the platform holder pushed forward with a new low-end console.
    One factor is that Xbox One X would have lasted a long time through the new generation, but would lack aspects Microsoft believes defines its new devices, such as the Xbox Velocity Architecture and graphical features such as ray tracing and variable rate shading.
    "We wanted to make sure that there was an entry level at the right price point so that we could really advance the generation rather than hold it back," said Goossen.
    "I've heard that Series S is going to hold back the next generation but I actually see Series S advancing it because by doing Series S we'll have more games written to the characteristics of the next generation."
    The price point was another crucial element, and reflects "a big change in how consoles are designed." While silicon cost reductions mean consoles have historically become cheaper over the course of a generation, this effect has become less pronounced.
    "Previous generations were kind of easy because at the beginning of the generation, you make something really expensive -- put as much silicon and as much performance as you could into it -- then you would just ride the cost reduction curves down to mass market prices," Goossen said. "That's not there anymore."
    He added: "The ironic thing is that we did look at Xbox One X and we couldn't get it down the price point we wanted to get, so I look at the Xbox Series S and it's cheaper than Xbox One X."

    FIFA 21 was unsurprisingly the biggest game across Europe, Middle East, parts of Asia and Africa during October, according to the latest GSD charts.
    The football game was comfortably the biggest selling title of the month. Digital and physical FIFA sales are down about 9.4% for the first four weeks compared with last year's FIFA 20, however, it's worth noting that this is a console transition year, with an updated version of the game set for December.
    No.2 belonged to another EA game in the form of Star Wars: Squadrons, which narrowly beat out Activision's Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, which had to settle for third spot.
    Despite launching right at the end of the month, the fourth biggest selling game of October across the regions was Watch Dogs: Legion from Ubisoft.
    The next highest charting new game is Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit at No.18. The Nintendo Switch game was only available in a box as it requires a remote control kart to play. Meanwhile, the new Dark Pictures game, Little Hope, just misses out on the Top 20 at No.22. The game was released right at the end of the month in time for Halloween.
    September's No.1 game, Super Mario 3D All-Stars, drops down to No.7. Meanwhile, Company of Heroes 2 re-enters the charts at No.8. The strategy game was part of a Sega promotion during October to celebrate the publisher's 60th anniversary.
    In terms of games hardware, just under 750,000 games consoles were sold across the EMEAA region. That is a drop on the 795,000 consoles sold during October 2019, although that's due to a significant drop in performance for PS4 and Xbox One - which is to be expected with the launch of PS5 and Xbox Series S/X in November.
    Unsurprisingly, Nintendo Switch remains the dominant platform by quite some margin. Switch console sales are up by almost 77% in October 2020 compared with the same period last year.
    Elsewhere, over 4.3 million accessories, points cards and toys-to-life products were sold across EMEAA during October, driven heavily by PlayStation Store wallet cards (followed by Xbox Live Gift Cards). The highest charting accessory was the DualShock 4 controller for PS4 at No.3.
    The performance is a slight drop on the 4.5 million accessories, points cards and toys-to-life products sold in October 2019. But again, we should expect to see some drops in these areas ahead of the launch of new consoles.
    In terms of just accessories (so headsets, controllers and cases), sales are actually up slightly, from 2.1 million in October 2019 to 2.2 million last month.

    Traditionally, the start of a new console generation is a hard reset.
    You bring home your expensive new game box with, at most, a handful of launch titles. Your previous console and all its games begin to collect dust -- assuming you haven't already traded them in. Out with the old, in with the new.
    Compare that to when you upgrade your phone. Everything is backed up to your computer or the cloud, you swap SIM cards, go through the usual setup process, download that backup -- and pick up exactly where you left off. Your photos, music, podcasts and apps are all present. Yes, there are a couple of shiny new features to get excited about, but your new phone has essentially replicated your old one rather than completely replaced it.
    Setting up my Xbox Series X felt exactly the same -- especially using the Xbox smartphone app to do the set-up while updates were downloading. As soon as that's done, it was like I was playing my Xbox One X. Same settings, same library of titles, same everything. Even the UI is the same -- although that's mostly because Microsoft, like mobile platform holders, iterates on its interface separate from hardware releases and did so just ahead of launch.
    The 'next' of this next-gen machine is far more subtle and offers a sense of continuity never experienced with any previous console
    So, thanks to cloud saves, I could just dive into the game I was playing on my previous Xbox the day, week, or even year before and continue where I left off. Just with a bigger box and a slightly tweaked controller.
