KRIKzz, the creator of the Everdrive products for retro consoles, has announced that he is working on a new project for the Nintendo 64. Not many details are known so far, but he plans on using SD for flashram (unless it is too slow, in which case he will be using CompactFlash (CF) card memory).
Check the following link below for photos of his current development. You can see the device is plugged into an open N64 console and wired to an Altera logic development board.

The N64 cart port is SLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWW. The throughput of an SD or CF isn't the problem, it's the seek time. While you could easily stream data straight from an SD or CF across the N64 cart port, random access would be a problem since SD and CF take just a little too long to latch a new address. That makes sense since that's how they designed - to be like electronic drives... very fast at streaming data, not so fast at random access. He'd be better off using XD flash instead. That was made for random access.
