We at DCEmu embrace everything that is homebrew and this week the announcement of the Wiz or GP2X Wiz (http://gp2x.co.uk/go.pl?A969) certainly shook everything up.

We now have a new console coming in less than a month which boasts the fastest speed on any handheld console at this time (533Mhz - the PSP is 333Mhz - GP2x is 2x200Mhz) and comes with 3D Chip and 64 Megs of ram.

It also comes with an Oled Touchscreen Display (not that i know what that is) and Dual Pads, but there has been some dismay at having no buttons one one side, well Craig the boss of GP2X UK (http://gp2x.co.uk/go.pl?A969) (Main UK, Europe and Worldwide distributer) has stated that if required they will promise to replace the 2nd dpad with real buttons should any issues arise with the system (thats an exclusive told to me tonight).

For those interested in what will be a new homebrew console heres the specs:

Little bigger than a mobile phone, more raw power than a PSP and 100% open.

Play games, emulators, movies and music - never has so much power been available in such a small handheld console.

Building on the already well established GP2X software base but adding more speed and graphical power to take open source gaming to the next level.

533Mhz ARM CPU
3D OpenGL Accelerator
64MB RAM
OLED Touch Screen
Li-ion Battery
Charge over USB
12 included games plus a large library of free games

Preorders are being taken at GP2X UK (http://gp2x.co.uk/go.pl?A969)

Im gonna get one on as soon as its released, question though, so if I and a bunch of people buy them and decide the controls are flawed they will give me buttons to replace them with for free?

Btw for your information, OLED is the most advanced screen technology, beats both plasma and LCD when it comes to deep blacks and rich colors, also pretty much eleminates viewing angle problems, so yeah screen is a bit smaller but its high high quality.

Actually, OLED is what has been used in cellphones and other similar things before. It is used because of the lower power consumption.

This is a pretty nice handheld though. If I would feel like spending the money, I would definitely do some programming for it.

oled is both

it gives you rich color and deep blacks becuase the screen itself is emmiting the light, not a fluorescent tube

and it happens to be very power friendly too

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organic_light-emitting_diode

Advantages

The radically different manufacturing process of OLEDs lends itself to many advantages over flat-panel displays made with LCD technology. Since OLEDs can be printed onto any suitable substrate using an inkjet printer or even screen printing technologies,[30] they can theoretically have a significantly lower cost than LCDs or plasma displays. Printing OLEDs onto flexible substrates opens the door to new applications such as roll-up displays and displays embedded in fabrics or clothing.

OLEDs enable a greater range of colors, brightness, and viewing angle than LCDs because OLED pixels directly emit light. OLED pixel colors appear correct and unshifted, even as the viewing angle approaches 90 degrees from normal. LCDs use a backlight and cannot show true black, while an "off" OLED element produces no light and consumes no power. Energy is also wasted in LCDs because they require polarizers which filter out about half of the light emitted by the backlight. Additionally, color filters in color LCDs filter out two-thirds of the light.

OLEDs also have a faster response time than standard LCD screens. Whereas a standard LCD currently has an average of 4-8 millisecond response time, an OLED can have less than 0.01ms response time.[31]

[edit] Disadvantages

The biggest technical problem for OLEDs is the limited lifetime of the organic materials. In particular, blue OLEDs historically have had a lifetime of around 14,000 hours (5 years at 8 hours a day) when used for flat-panel displays, which is lower than typical lifetime of LCD, LED or PDP technology—each currently rated for about 60,000 hours, depending on manufacturer and model. Toshiba and Panasonic have come up with a way to solve this problem with a new technology that can double the lifespan of OLED displays, pushing its expected life past that of LCD displays. A metal membrane helps deliver light from polymers in the substrate throughout the glass surface more efficiently than current OLEDs. The result is the same picture quality with half the brightness and a doubling of the screen's expected life.[32]

In 2007, experimental PLEDs were created which can sustain 400 cd/m² of luminance for over 198,000 hours for green OLEDs and 62,000 hours for blue OLEDs.[33]

The intrusion of water into displays can damage or destroy the organic materials. Therefore, improved sealing processes are important for practical manufacturing and may limit the longevity of more flexible displays.

In my humble opinion, I hope that there will be a magnifying glass for the screen like the one that existed for older gameboy systems. That type of peripheral would actually make me want to purchase it, since it would mean I see the screen at a decent size with far less power consumption.

Seriously, it does not matter how advanced the screen is, size really does matter.

Its 2.8 inches isn't it?

Thats only -0.2 inches from a ds screen isn't it?

Whats the big difference?

Yeah but its 300+ dollars, Im not in for spending that much....

Question: How much more powerful is it then the GP2X F-200?

Will it play Snes and Neo Geo perfect? Plus since it has a 3d accelerator wont it be able to do Playstation? Thats what I been hearing...

Nice design but it doesn't seem to have lot of buttons... Snes game need 6, Sega game need 3....

Hardware specs seem great, but button execution is horrible. Does this thing even have shoulder buttons? And two d-pads with a promise to switch one out for buttons. Why does it have to piss me off before I can have buttons? Just start me off with buttons so I don't pay $300 just to send it back right away for buttons.

Yes i have to say it's really ugly to have two d-pads. What else had two d-pads? yes the virtual boy would be a good emulator for it tough. :)

The thing is........whats the point?

My gp2x emulates megadrive, amiga, speccy, doom perfectly well.

Its not as the GTA san andreas will be released on it so the extra power seems pointless to me.

Sorry to sound pesemistic but the most powerful games on the gp2x seem to be doom clones duke nukem etc. The psp is able to play modern quality 3d games where this will just get homebrew pacman type games.

At best we can hope for perfect n64 psx emuy

the thought of playing psx games at full speed would be ace tho

Yeah it has shoulder buttons

"What else had two d-pads? "

Wonderswan did, I liked it perfectly well.

When the title says "the fastest handheld on earth" isn't it a bit misleading?

As far as I can remember isn't the Pandora way more powerful than this?

Sorry for posting this if I am completely wrong. :o

It seems good... being pocket sized is a big plus, but the screen is only the size of the one on my phone and the problem is the psp can emulate most of the old consoles, so unless this can emulate dreamcast it just has no advantages over psp.. but if someone finally has the sense to include a phone built into a handheld i would seriously consider it, i mean the extra hardware needed would only add a small amount of size, weight and cost and would be perfect for one of these homebrew consoles

phone and a game system, eh didnt they try that already with the N gage? That was pitiful...really funny taco system.

Will this emulate better then the psp cause over at the psp boards they say it won't.

If this can emulate N64, it would be awesome

spardasieg
September 2nd, 2008, 01:09
It really depends I think on how well the 3d accelerator in it is im guessing, hey if it can do ps1 and N64 with full speed and sound that would be crazy awesome. Wonder how long it would take for those emulators to come out. Im still not sure If I should get this for emulation or the new psp with the better screen.

If this had a blue tooth earpiece with it and was a cell phone i would buy it right away. since it doesn't then i am going to have to agree that it has almost no advantages over the psp. :/

This thread here (http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=145302) tells that The Wiz will have the 2nd D-pad replaced with buttons and also yeald a 3.5mm headphone jack. What does anyone think on that?

 The display 2.8 inch is too small; especially it’s a touch screen panel. 3.5 or 4 inch will be good:thumbup:, and with resolution 480x320 it will be super, and it sucks no TV out , also a playtime approx 5 hours it’s not impressive:rofl:.

"5 hours it’s not impressive"

Stares at psp...

"The display 2.8 inch is too small"

Stares at game boy micro that has a 2inch screen...Then looks towards the gba that has .2 inches more.

I really think some people need reading glasses and do not realize it yet.

I'm sorry I have to say this I'm a big fan of gp2x I own one but its really dispointing to see this piece of shit as an upgrade so fast first off sec it does'nt even go on line what a joke and also how ugly is this thing man the 2 joysticks was a bad idea and the 533 meg processor is nothing to go wow we to I think its a waste of time wait till the pandora then talk to the people.
