I wondered the same thing, I have a psp ds and even an ibook and thought i was good portable wise. But I decided to give this thing a try and it should be in here soon. I think if it delivers on what it claims then it will be good. I'm sick of fighting sony over homebrew so im gona give this a whirl...... Best of luck in your decision though.

My question is somewhat similar...
I've read in several locations that early sales of the system are really meant for developers. I was wondering what that really means? Is it buggy? If I should wait, then til when? Will they make an announcement?
To me I want it as a portable MAME system. Everything else is PURELY gravy in my opinion. All I wanted was 1992-ish and previous. Specifically, Golden Axe, Final Fight, maybe Street Fighter...and with the latest release of MAME today that sounds like it pretty much has been accomplished. Which I am in SHOCK and AWE of...
Maybe I'll wait until Mid-January if no one really responds with some insights...but I'm getting this sooner rather than later.

I have had my GP2X for a week and am really happy withthe results. OK, the joystick can be a bit awkward, but I'm getting used to it slowly. The batteries are also OK as long as you get NiMh 2300/2500 mah ones.
As for games, I have al of my megadrive games running near perfect, and those that do not will work on future releases of the emulator. SF2 was out for the MD. Then there are the SNES and NES and Master system emulators which need to be developed more before they are really worth playing.
As for MAME, there are reports that a version will be released soon that can play Final Fight, Gnouls n Ghosts and anything before that with sound.
I say you should wait until the next release of these emulators before you buy.

Yea, I was wondering about it myself, and while searching online I found that it runs off of 2 AA batteries. That kind of turned me off personally, however it does have good battery life (6 hrs.) but I would just rather use my psp and wait for new emulators and homebrew apps. to come out then have to spend more money on a new hand held device, and then buy batteries. But thats just me. Now if you don't mind the battery thing, I have heard that it is pretty good.

I too am considering getting one of these. I have a PSP but this being open and Linux at that appeals to me. Bad points IMO are no wi-fi support, in fact it's the only thing holding me off it right now and I'm also afraid that the company will release a similar product with wi-fi support a few months down the line.

I got my GP2X in December 2005 and still haven't managed to get it to do anything. I ordered a MultiMedia Card (which is probably not the right thing) and now I'm saving up to buy an SD Card which is what I thought I was getting when I ordered the MultiMedia Card. From all the time I've spent reading the forums at another web-site devoted to the GP2X I would say wait until they iron out the problems or you may be disapointed.

Other Cool things that Beats The PSP Are the Movie Playing. I Hate that You Need To Convert Your Movies for PSP Format!
Anybody Knows When The Next Version Of The GP2x Will Be Available?

I was also considering getting a GP2X but don't know whether to look around for a 2nd hand PSP with 1.5 firmware or just take the plunge with a GP2X. I'm mainly into emulated old games so a PSP with any newer firmware is a non starter at the minute I think.
I have quite a few Megadrive/Snes etc Roms on my PC at the minute are these ok to use with the emulators for GP2X or will I need different ones.
Also I read somewhere that I will definately need to buy a SD card at the same time because you shouldnt store stuff to the internal memory is that also true?
Thanks for the help

You must use an SD card, the NAND (internal memory) is not designed to have files being written constantly.
MD and SNES Roms are okay, no need for conversion
All development on the handheld is still quite early so they dont match up to the quality of the PSP emulators yet. I expect this to change over the next 6 months
The next version (if there is a next version) will be march according to rumours. At worst, they will change the joystick and/or joystick cap and *maybe* the LCD already apparently that's already changed.

That's a BIG maybe, even the release of the Second Editions are just plain rumours no thanks to Lik-Sang ¬¬. It is more likely that they will just change the joystick cap to make it more comfortable.
At the moment I would say that the best time to get one is when they release a new stable firmwre and the comply with the GPL, hardware modifications or not.
