So yeah as the topic says I got a PS3 for cheap, that is until I pay for the repair:p.

But I was pondering what I should do with it?

- It is a 60Gb PS3
- Can't play any Blu-ray discs, no ps3 games, no movies
- Plays everything else, PS2, PS1, DVDs, etc.
- Got it for roughly $100 bucks
- Repair (new laser) costs around $160

Got it from my friend, the one that ditches good things the moment he starts having problems with them.

He told me I can buy and download full PS3 games from the PSN, I hardly doubt it of course. (If I'm wrong, please tell me, cause I could save some serious cash LOL)

First I think I'll go for the repair, if I could skip it, It would be awesome.

Then I was thinking about getting a bigger harddrive, installing linux and some emus (don't have any idea of how hard that can be, but I guess I'm gonna have to find out)

So what you think guys?

edit: Also if someone can point me out in the right direction on how to get the Adhoc Party thingy working, I would really appreciate it.

Well there are PSN games (like XBLA) but don't thing you can get full ps3 retail games on PSN.

Its werid that it can play dvds but not blue-ray, I don't know how the ps3 works, does it have 2 laser?

I know on the DC some times it will read CDs but not GB-disc, but it was a simple laser tweak fixes that.

Actually is funny that you bring that up, cause I kinda know the guy who is gonna repair it and he told me the details.

Here is the thing, 40 and 60 GB PS3s have a single laser that runs everything using filters to create both lasers, the one on mine is wored out and can't get enough power to create the one for blu-rays, plain and simple the laser is toasted so I need a new one, cause also the laser can't be "tweaked".

Overall the laser is a piece of shit (the new one might last about the same, like a year and a half)

On 80Gb PS3 there are 2 lasers, one for blu-ray, and other for common formats, and it is less likely to burn out like the older models.

I didn't knew but this is like a common failure on those PS3, it would simply stop reading Blu-rays.
You could say this is the Sony Version of the RROD, only not as popular (maybe cause not much people have a PS3)

So yeah beware 40 and 60Gb owners your laser might get toasted at any moment.

edit: I bought it knowing this cause the plan is to use the 360 for the multiplatform shovelware (few gems among it of course), and the PS3 just for the exclusives which are near to none and probably yellow dog linux with emus.

Hmm, never knew that tidbit of information about the bad laser in those earlier PS3s. I do want one for full backwards compatibility, though.

And congrats on the incredibly cheap purchase. :)

Well the first PS2 model (the big unit) were known to have laser that would go kaput in short time, maybe this is an iteration for the PS3? I don't know. However I will say that my European launch model which is 60GB still works fine all round.

Thanks Eviltaco, If you want one with full backwards compatibility maybe you can hunt for the rare 80Gb one that can play ps2 games via software. (don't know what that means it just says it's through software)

I know Shrygue, maybe is like you say, my PS2 was one of the faulty models (30009 i think), the thing has been through a lot, really a lot, and it's still up and runing to this day. Some repairs also, but nothing as drastical as changing the laser.

On other things, my friend just bought another one, 80Gb PS3 bundle with Fifa09 and an extended warranty from Walmart, just in case. Wish I could have money to spend like that

Also I managed to get the adhoc party working, anyone cares for some online play for Dissidia, Tekken DR or Yugioh GX TF3

My PSN account is Mikejmg9

Well, I would, but there's too much of a difference in quality. The NTSC 20GB/60GB PS3's had full backwards compatibility through hardware. The first 80GB model (and any PAL PS3 that has PS2 BC) had some PS2 hardware in it (as far as I know, it still had the PS2 graphics synthesizer), but Sony emulated other components such as the EE (which the original PS3's had).. Making way for more limited/mediocre backwards compatibility.

I know man, but the laser thingy got me kinda freaked out of those models. I have one of them LOL, but I wouldn't recomend it.

Another friend of mine has the 80Gb that is backwards compatible, he said something like with the firmware updates he could play some PS2 games he couldn't play before, maybe it's getting improved with it.
