In Armored Core 3, it has been 20 years since the Earth Government and the Corporations battled for supremacy. The majority of humanity lives beneath the surface of the planet, relatively safe from the continuing struggle. A new and mysterious entity has entered the picture, however, snapping up all the available Ravens for intense missions that only their custom-built Armored Core Units can handle.

While Sony's digital comics store for the PSP won't be launching until next month, that hasn't stopped the company from teaming with IDW to give away some free comics to tide you over. Free doesn't need a store!

The publisher is offering an issue of Star Trek: Year Four - The Enterprise Experiment, which you can get by visiting the regular ol' PlayStation Store and entering the following code:

724K-A4BG-JLD7

Bam. Free comic. There are more codes for more comics (Transformers) being handed out on the PS Comics site and via Twitter, so those wanting to give the PSP comic reader a good workout, you know what to do.

Interestingly, it says the Star Trek offer is good only until December 16, giving you a fairly good indication of when the store is due to launch.

Japanese publisher Marvelous Entertainment has revealed its PSP games have been far more profitable for the company than its Wii releases in 2009.

Of its five PSP releases in the fiscal first half, four have returned profits for the company, it said. However, from its four Wii releases, only one has delivered a return.

Data presented to investors and reported by Siliconera, show that Marvelous's PSP games sold in higher units than its Wii titles. Combined with lower development costs, the games, in turn, delivered profits.

In Japan, PSP titles Muramasa: The Demon Blade, Hitman Reborn! Battle Arena 2 and Half-Minute Hero sold 47,000, 41,000 and 70,000 units respectively.

The Wii's Little King's Story, used as a comparison, sold just 26,000 units in Japan. Although it did fare better in Europe where sales of 67,000 were achieved.

As well as having lower development costs, Marvelous added that it believes its PSP games did better because they were based on established IPs.

Next year, the company will release its first multi-platform PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 titles, No More Heroes: Hero's Paradise in Japan, and Deadly Premonition in North America.

After Sunday's epic fail of a 1.0 release, I am proud to anounce version 1.1 of PSPEText, the text reader you can use while you play PSP and PSX games.

I rewrote about half of the application for this release, making it a proper kernel-mode module, eliminating heap allocation, drastically reducing stack allocation, and nearly perfecting the game suspend functions.

This was tested on about two dozen games between myself and a very kind soul (thanks Joe!). Now all games load without issue when the module is installed (because it is a proper kernel module). The text reader works on every game tested except for Exit. In that game the suspend routine just can't cleanly stop the game, so it hangs for a few seconds and then resumes the game.

Project Homepage: PSPEText at QBRADQ's Code Corner

ABOUT Section of the Read Me:

PSPEText is a kernel-mode plugin that allows you to suspend any PSP game at
any time and read text files stored on the memory stick. This is useful for
reading FAQs from sites like www.gamefaqs.com while playing your favorite PSP
games.

This text reader features an 80-column display, which is a must-have for
reading FAQ files.

Please find download attached or at the project homepage.

Sony has told Eurogamer that the PSP version of LittleBigPlanet will be uploaded to the PlayStation Store in Europe today ahead of the game's retail release tomorrow. It will cost £21.99 online.

The news comes after US gamers were told they would probably have to wait a little while for LBP due to "hiccups", in the words of senior producer Mark Green on the US PlayStation blog. The game came out in shops there on Tuesday.

Green said Sony was "currently working around the clock to get this issue worked out". In a separate statement to Kotaku, SCEA said, "The goal is to have the titles available on the same day, and that is usually the case."

The wait should be worth it though. LittleBigPlanet is one of the best PSP games in ages.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has finally debuted the first batch of Blu-ray discs that take advantage of Digital Copy for PSP. With this feature, people that own both a PS3 and a PSP will be able to copy a portable version of a movie directly from a Blu-ray disc to Sony's handheld. Well, almost directly.

There are a few steps you must take to activate the PSP copy. When you insert the Blu-ray disc into the PS3, you'll see two icons appear on the XMB, one that allows you to store a SD version of the movie to your PS3 hard drive. You must be logged on to the PlayStation Network and then enter a unique 12-digit code included with the disc. Once the activation process is complete, a 2GB file will transfer to your PS3. You can watch this movie on the hard drive (but why would you when you have the Blu-ray disc?), or you can copy it over to the PSP -- a process which takes about five minutes total.

The video quality of the "Digital Copy" is fantastic, especially on the PSP's smaller screen. Unfortunately, the initial batch of movies leaves a lot to be desired: Godzilla (the 1998 American version), The Ugly Truth and Angels & Demons. Hopefully, SPHE will start implementing the feature on some ... y'know, good movies in the future.
Already, various non-game applications can be found on both the PS3 and PSP. From Skype to VidZone, the XMB now plays home to a variety of services. Going forward, it appears Sony will open the PlayStation platform further with the introduction of "non-game" development kits in the middle of next year.

Last night's 6.20 firmware update for PSP lays down the framework for additional non-gaming content. The PSP update adds a new category to the XMB called "Extras," which allows users to launch the web browser to download third-party apps on the PSP. The PlayStation Network Digital Comics Reader is the first official "Extra" to appear on the XMB, with more sure to come in 2010.

A wide release of non-game dev kits may attract the active homebrew community to release official programs on the PSP and PS3. We'll be chatting with SCEA soon to get further details. Until then, we'll be dreaming of a native YouTube application for our PSPs.
PS3 gets the bump to version 3.1, introducing a little bit of Facebook integration, changes to photo viewing and friends list tweaks. We wrote some more about that the other day, and now the European PlayStation blog has pictures and stuff.

PSP, meanwhile, is up to version 6.2, again detailed by the Euro blog, and the principal additions are options to transfer video and photo playlists to the portable either from PC (using Media Go 1.3) or PS3.

The latest PSP firmware also introduces the Digital Comics reader, but the store to go with it doesn't launch until December, so there's not much you can do with it. When it does go live, it will do so first in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, with other regions to follow.

Sony: Video Delivery Service will grow weekly

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president and CEO Andrew House has told GamesIndustry.biz that the newly-launched PlayStation Video Delivery Service - which encompasses around 2000 films across Europe, including about 800 for the UK - will grow its offering at a rate of about 50 movies every week.

Speaking in an industry-exclusive interview ahead of the launch of the service, House explained that SCEE would be following the template set out by the US, which has increased its offering "something like 700 per cent" since its launch 15 months ago.

"It'll be a little bit more complex, because we're trying to maintain that mix between Hollywood content as well as local studio content, and also I think we'll see short form and television become part of that play as well," he said.

"But I think we're in a good spot - I think we have something like 2000 movies available at launch, which is a pretty substantial library. Break that down to a per-country basis and there's around 800 films available for the UK, for example.

"So we're starting out with a really strong offering - there's plenty there to choose from, a tremendous number of current hits - and then I think we'll grow it somewhere in the region I hope of about an additional 50 movies per week. So that'll encourage return traffic, people coming back, something new for them there to check out - we're feeling fairly comfortable about the content line-up we've got, and that's led us again to this being the right time to launch."

He also indicated that, following the launch of the PS3 Slim a couple of months ago - which along with a new, lower price point has prompted a 300 per cent increase in the platform's sales numbers - now was the right time to release the service to the market, although there were other considerations as well.

"First and foremost, clearly - if you're going to launch a sufficiently robust video delivery service in Europe then that requires full support from all the Hollywood studios, but another critical component is making sure we have the right mix of local content as well," he explained.

"That takes somewhat longer in terms of the range of partners that are involved, making sure those business deals are put to bed - so I think in some part we didn't want to launch the service until we had all of those components in place, and that's come together now.

"Also, we felt that we were launching at a time - as it turns out, fairly correctly predicting - that with the launch of the PS3 Slim and the new price point that there would be a significant shift in momentum in the market place. It's a good time to have a more... let's say 'family-friendly' price point, to be able to start to introduce services which probably have a broader appeal to the mass market than just pure videogame focus.

"So I think it was a culmination of those factors that made this feel it was the right time to move ahead."
