Sega pushes Mega Drive Mini to 2019

Sega has delayed the launch of its Mega Drive Mini console into 2019.


According to a statement from Sega, it had been working toward a launch before the end of 2018, after announcing the system in April this year.




The statement, which was translated by Gematsu, acknowledged that the size of the response in territories outside of Japan was a factor in the delay. Sega also stated that it is rethinking the design of the hardware, building out its core team with new talent experienced in software development.


Sega is now preparing a Genesis model for North America and a Mega Drive model for Europe, with all versions set to launch simultaneously worldwide.


Earlier today, Sony announced its own entry into the retro console market with the PlayStation Classic, which will beat the Mega Drive Mini to market on December 3.
