Not for the first time Apple is said to be ready to position the next iteration of Apple TV as a living room games device.
It’s always seemed like the logical next step for the hardware, but minor revisions to the hardware have been and gone without any meaningful attempt from the company to make a grab for a share of console revenues.
Now 9to5Mac reports that “sources with knowledge of the product” say the 4th generation Apple TV will not only enjoy a games-centric hardware boost but also boast compatibility with a range of Bluetooth gaming equipment, most notably controllers.
Furthermore, it reckons the announcement will be made alongside the unveiling of the next iPhone on September 9th.
As for the specifics, Apple TV will of course have access to Apple’s vast digital games store. Games that are compatible will be playable with either the bundled remote control – which is said to include both physical buttons and a touchpad, as well as motion sensors – or via more traditional Bluetooth controllers, the site says.
The new Apple TV, which will also boast an iOS 9 inspired UI, is tipped for release in October for between $149 and $199.
