Mortal Kombat 11 is the second best-selling game of 2019 in the US, according to data from NPD, after a strong April debut in which it was the top-selling game on every platform.
The latest in NetherRealm's long-running series topped NPD's software charts for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Switch. It is the first third-party published game to top the monthly chart on Nintendo Switch since the launch of Ubisoft's Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle in September 2017.
The PS4 exclusive Days Gone also had a strong debut month -- the seventh highest ever for a game published by Sony, but it wasn't enough to finish ahead of Mortal Kombat. It is also surpassed any previous Sony Bend game, despite only launching worldwide on April 26.
The third biggest game of April in the US was another strong performer: MLB The Show 19, which had the fastest start of any game in the series' history, and is already the best-selling sports title of the year.
As a result, dollar sales of video game software spiked 15% compared to April 2018, reaching $427 million overall.
The total spend on hardware showed the opposite trend, falling 29% year-on-year to $160 million. The only platform that grew over April 2018 was the Nintendo Switch, which was the best-selling platform overall in both unit and dollar sales.
