Booze is far more likely to **** up your life if you live in a state where marijuana is legal (health concerns, DUI, etc). If you live in a state where possession of a joint is viewed in the same light as selling fentanyl laced heroin to middle schoolers, then it's more of a toss up.
Possession charges for less than 3.5g and/or dirty paraphernalia have royally ****ed a couple of my friends over, and will likely limit their income potential for the rest of their lives.
Chronic use of the chronic is probably more sustainable in the sense that it's less likely to kill you either directly or indirectly than alcohol. The key with both seems to be moderation.
Thus far, the ~1g of herb and 1-2 beers per day program has been working for me. YMMV
