ps3 PS3 closes in on Japanese Wii sales

    via Games Industry

Sony's PlayStation 3 Japanese console sales showed signs of catching up to those of the Nintendo Wii in June, according to the magazine publisher Enterbrain, as reported by Reuters.

The Wii still managed to outsell the PS3 by 1.7 to 1, putting it at the top of Japanese hardware sales for a seventh consecutive month, but the ratio has fallen significantly since the 6-to-1 lead the Wii had the month before.

The past few months have seen the PS3 reap the benefits of a number of high profile titles not available to the Wii that may have boosted console sales, including Grand Theft Auto IV and the PS3-exclusive title Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

According to Enterbrain, Nintendo Sold 235,990 Wii units of in the five weeks ended June 29, while Sony sold 139,494 PS3 console units.

Actually, another site had worded it a bit better:
Wii Beats PS3 in June, in Spite of MGS4

    And ended the column with:
If MGS4 can't do it, I'm not sure anything can.

Yeah, it really didn't sell a lot of consoles or copies on launch...

Funny you should say that. For months you have crying for this to come to the 360 and now its nothing special?

As a matter of fact, MGS4 sold over half a million copies in Japan in its first 4 days, and sold over 1 million copies in Europe in its first week...

It may not have done much console sales, but thats the part I don't get.

MGS4 is an amazing game, and thats coming from me who only had 2 hours on it. If any game should have sold a console this year, it is definitely MGS4.

As far as the entire statement being true or not, I've learned you can't trust what any site says about hardware or software sales. I'll wait for NPD, they seem most accurate.

IGN had this to say about moving consoles, according to Famitsu. NPD sales data would be nice, but 77,000 is pretty decent for a game. Mind you, thats only Japan's console sales from MGS4 (probably only includes the bundle. ie not counting people who bought a regular PS3 and MGS4, at the same time).
