Puzzle game Bejeweled has been labelled "the most popular casual videogame of the 21st century" by parent PopCap, after it revealed that the series has cleared 25 million copies served.

The company is calling Bejewelled "one of the most ubiquitous and accessible in the history of video games", with estimated six billion hours of play poured into the two games.

The mammoth sales number number comes from updated data on sales of Bejewelled and its sequel across Web, mobile, retail, in-flight and other channels, says PopCap.

"Considering we tried to sell Bejeweled outright to more than one industry giant back in the early days of our company, and got no takers even after reducing our asking price to $60,000, this little game has done all right for itself," said Bejewelled creator Jason Kapalka.

"I vividly recall prospective buyers telling us 'It's not even a game,' while showing us the door," he laughed.

We prefer Tetris.
