Default PSP still atop Japanese hardware sales

    Source - Joystiq

While the Nintendo DS continues to experience shortages in Japan, the PSP remained on top of Japanese hardware sales chart, this according to research group Media Create. Nintendo plans on replenishing DS supply by the end of the month, so it should be interesting to see how the restock effects subsequent charts.

Japanese sales (units sold) the week of 1/9/2006 - 1/15/2006:

    PSP - 57,686
    NDS - 54,284
    PS2 - 39,076
    GBASP - 9,982
    GBM - 6,341
    X360 - 6,107
    GCN - 5,465
    GBA - 233
    XBX - 119

Yeah, I thought I read a month or two ago that the DS was doing better in Japan. But if the PSP has taken pole position, that makes me happy. It seems that the PSP is getting better with age and it gets far more use than my DS does.

Damn it, Nintendo... DO NOT LOSE THIS BATTLE. You can't afford it. Make more Nintendo DS systems, and get them the hell on store shelves NOW before you lose your momentum!

For those that weren't aware of the current situation, see this post:

To sum up the post though, PSP is temporarily selling more than DS because the DS is so popular that they're having a hard time keeping it in stock.

It puzzles me as to why people think this is good news, the ONLY reason the PSP has beaten the DS for the last 2 weeks is because the DS is selling SO well in Japan that Nintendo got behind on production and they have practically sold out! It officially became the quickest selling console in Japan's gaming history last month when it hit over 5 million systems. Also, take a look at the game charts, all but 3 of the top ten is DS games, there is only one PSP game in there having sold 377,138. Also, 3 of those DS titles has sold between 1 million and 1.5 million copies with 2 more very very close to 1 million. When the PSP and DS were announced, I thought the PSP would kill the DS, how wrong I was. So far the DS has been a far better system games wise, a very good example of "superior hardware does not make the best system". I think Sony need to concentrate on GAMES and forget the rest of the crap.
