PSN's '17 million' statistic includes PS3, PSN, official forums

When Sony rattled off at last week's CES that 17 million PlayStation Network accounts had been registered, we were at once both impressed and skeptical. That number happens to match Xbox Live's data that was released days prior, despite its one-year lead and more aggressive push in the field.

The Doubting Thomases over at MTV Multiplayer got in touch with Sony to clarify the figure and gain some more perspective on the issue. As it turns out, that number includes people who have created accounts via PS3, PSP or the official website, which requires a PSN ID to access the forums. While still impressive, we're happier to have some more context on this one.

Most people on the forums have a PS3 or PSP I imagine anyways XDD
Either way, it's free unlike XBOX Live so you have to expect PSN to catch up or surpass the number of users sooner or later in my opinion.

EITHER WAY, I just like how anytime Sony get's anything everyone tries to shoot it down like it did something wrong.
After all the statement, as far as I know, is just how many PSN users, not how many users have logged onto PSN through PS3.

I couldnt imagine that the PSN numbers wont, at some point anyways, pass LIVE numbers. It will most likely just be an arbitrary event that holds no real meaning but it will be used as ammo by Sony for sure.

Well the only difference between Sony going, "We have [insert number of members here." compared to XBOX is, XBOX charges people(even if it's a yearly fee) to have a Gold account.

SO the only reason it probably won't be made a big deal of, is because it's free, and Microsoft makes money from the users instead of advertisers and such helping pay for a free service and such.
