psp iPhone 3GS can surpass PSP's gaming performance

pple’s new iPhone 3G S has the potential to outdo Sony’s PSP in terms of graphical capabilities – that was the assessment of Michael Schade, CEO of the Germany-headquartered mobile phone developer Fishlabs.
Speaking to Pocketgamer, Schade reasons that the new iPhone’s OpenGL 2.0 support can allow developers to craft games which will “push the iPhone beyond PSP," though he does warn that such opportunities will be resisted by financial barriers.
"As graphic assets need to be designed from scratch to benefit from 2.0 shaders, it will be very hard to monetize the extra effort in the early days," he said.

"It's definitely not worth it for $0.99 apps."
Schade was not however unconcerned that developers will have more iPhone systems to optimise for. He said the catalogue of iPhones and iPod Touches will create “some fragmentation”, but he says Fishlabs can still support all devices, using “just one SKU that detects automatically what device it's running on, and switches to the best graphics automatically."

Iphone 3G S will surpass the PSP in Atari style gameplay (Touchscreen is the joystick and one button for actions). Galaga clones will be awesome on the new IPhone.

The IPhone is a phone and an IPod that can play games and go online (Very good browser).

The PSP is a gaming handheld that can play music, movies, and go online (The browser hasn't seen an update since adding Flash 6 capabilities in the 2.xx firmwares.

But remember what I said before: IPhone is an IPop and a cellphone. The PSP is a Gaming handheld. The new IPop will not surpass PSP because the PSP was built with gaming in mind. The IPhone's gaming capabilities came second to the phones three primary functions, IPod, Internet, and Phone. PSP's main functions are Game, Music, and Video. The online capabilities were not initially planned for the device as there is still room for improvement for these functions. If everyone remembers, the PSP was being sold as an entertainment center that one can carry around, even though Gaming was(still is) it's main function.
The IPhone is being sold as a smart phone (which is still happening.

Unless they release an IPod with a D-pad, and more face button (and a couple of triggers) then it will not surpass the PSP in aspects of gameplay as the PSP has the controls gamers need to play epic handheld games such as Crisis Core or God of War.
Example: the new Gran Turismo coming out is perfect for the PSP because it has more than control inputs from the PSP than the IPhone.

The game might work on the IPhone, but the controls would be overly simple for the system and certain game abilities would not work with the IPhone.

I would say that the IPhone an surpass the Nintendo DS with creative use of the touch screen. However, that is all the system has, touch and tilt control.Of course, one can still make fun games similar to the DS with that...

Ever try playing one of the games that have a virtual D-pad on the IPhone? It is harder than it looks, because you can not feel the control with your finger while focusing on the game and at times when making a critical turn or jump you will miss the button on the screen. ANNOYING

I would personally see the new iPhone even the current model in theory surpassing the Nintendo DS, but to say competing with the PSP.... too "apples and oranges" they're just too different systems. And like said in previous posts "the iphone was made with the phone, ipod, and internet in mind" where the PSP was made for gaming, music, and video. I wouldn't be surprised if developers are more excited to develop for iPhone because of the success of the app store presented by Apple. But by no means is the iPhone a superior gaming device.
