3Q09 figures from Gartner place the iPhone maker within touching distance of RIM as Nokia flags

The seven million iPhones sold by Apple in 3Q09 earned it a 17.1 per cent share of the global smartphone market, according to Gartner.
The research says that iPhone's average selling price (ASP) is holding steady and states that sales in the fourth quarter should be even stronger as Apple starts selling in China, an additional carrier in the UK (Orange), and in an additional 16 countries.
Meanwhile, Nokia’s share of the smartphone market reached an all time low in the 3Q09 at 39 per cent, compared with 45 per cent in 2Q09. This caused the Symbian OS to lose ground too, while Research In Motion reached 20 per cent share, its highest yet.
Gartner says RIM’s sales rested on the Curve 8900 in Europe and the Tour and Storm 2 with Verizon Wireless in the US.
