    Default MP4 video format

If the PSP can handle video at all, then there has to be some sort of codec to "decode" the video file in real time as it is played.

So is it possible to develop Codecs for PSP?
Maybe through a 3rd party homebrew media player?

Yes and it is already being done albeit slowly. See news about a port of MPlayer.

And does Mplayer handle various codecs or just AVC?

Various codecs, whether it is in the port or not, I do not know.

I hope it's in the port, cause from what I understand AVC conversion is a pain in the A$$

Remember that the port is pretty slow at the moment, so don't expect much.
