Nintendo remains the largest publisher in Japan, outselling its nearest competitor by 8.3 million units.

Japanese site Oolongtea compiled released figures for the publishers active in the territory, with domestic firms perhaps unsurprisingly topping the list.

Nintendo mustered 12.9 million sales, followed by Square Enix at 4.6 million. Take Two was the best-performing Western Publisher, at 278,000 units.

The DS was the most popular platform, constituting 56 per cent of all Nintendo games and 63 per cent of Square Enix's sales.
