Brutal fighting game Mortal Kombat is playable in 2D and stereoscopic 3D - at the same time.
The on-screen fighters are rendered in 2D for the game's PlayStation 3 exclusive 3D mode, which means the action remains visible even when you're not wearing 3D glasses. If you're not wearing 3D glasses, the 3D backgrounds look a bit blurry but the characters appear "crisp and clean", according to Sony reports.
So, if you've got only one pair of those expenses 3D shutter glasses but a few mates around for a session, everyone's happy.
"We didn't want 3D to change the basic mechanics or complicate things needlessly", Mortal Kombat creative director and series co-creator Ed Boon told the EU PlayStation Blog.
"Our 3D implementation makes the characters pop from the background a little more, helps you focus on them."
A PlayStation Network demo of Boon's gory brawler is due out on Wednesday – for PlayStation Plus subscribers.
It comes with four playable fighters: Johnny Cage, Mileena, Scorpion and Sub-Zero, and two environments: The Living Forest and The Pit, complete with its gruesome stage fatality.
