The Nineties and Noughties clash in upcoming adventure, marking the hedgehog’s 20th anniversary

Long-running franchises often talk about revisiting their roots, but Sega is taking this to a whole new level with Sonic Generations.
Due for release on Xbox 360 and PS3 later this year, the game puts players in control of two versions of Sonic: the classic 1991 vision and the slimmer, taller modern day version. Each will have their own abilities, whether it’s old Sonic’s Spin Dash or modern Sonic’s Homing Attack.

Similarly, the gameplay will mix the styles of ‘90s side-scrolling platforming and the more open, 3D sections seen in the latest games. The game is due for release this Christmas.
“Sonic Generations will certainly be a fitting celebration for Sonic’s 20th Anniversary,” said David Corless, Sega’s global brand director for Sonic.
“By having the classic 1991 Sonic that many fans know and love team up with his modern day incarnation, we are bringing back the nostalgia of the early days of Sonic and combining it with the innovation and stunning HD technology of the modern gaming era.
Sonic Generations will bring to life the last twenty years of Sonic’s universe in a truly unique and imaginative way.”
