The UK games retail market generated £27.7m last week, a 136 per cent rise week-on-week and the second highest number this year.

Over 900,000 software units were sold last week, up 75 per cent over the seven days before.

It’s amazing what two games can do. The market was driven largely by Gears of War 3, comfortably the biggest seller of the week. F1 2011 also performed well, but had to settle for No.2.

The other big launch of last week was streaming service OnLive. There were special offers running for over 100 games on the platform, but these sales are not included in this week’s figures.

Can the market grow again next week? Retail and EA will expect it to, what with the arrival today of the UK’s second most popular game franchise – FIFA.
