    Default PS3 to Use BD-ROMs?

Asahi PC, a Japanese PC magazine, recently interviewed Mr. Nishitani, who's been collaborating with Sony lately. Apparently PS3 development is progressing, and the system may even release in 2005. What Mr. Nishitani is working on, though, is integrating Blu-ray Disc reading functionality into the PS3.
The Blu-ray Disc format (which comes on BD-ROMs) can hold 25 GB of data, and double-sided BD-ROMs should be ready by the end of this year, which should have 50 GB capacity. By contrast, DVDs hold 4.7 GB and double sided DVDs have 9.4 GB capacity. There's no official word from Sony on this yet, but seeing as Sony was the first company to make a successful CD based console and, later, release the first DVD based console, it seems likely Sony will pioneer another new storage medium with their next console.

    What do you think?

Definitely possible, however, I had heard that the PS3 would be backwardly compatible with the PS2, and as Blu-ray drives aren't going to be compatible with DVD, they'd have to have two lasers, which may be prohibitively expensive.
