New stats from market watcher Strategy Analytics say Microsoft smartphone shipments grew 36 per cent sequentially to reach 2.7 million units in the fourth quarter of 2011.
Within this, Nokia captured top position as the world’s number one vendor on the OS. It grabbed 33 per cent of the market, with 0.9m sales.
Who would have thought it? It was only this time last year that the world was still struggling to absorb the revelation that Nokia would abandon Symbian and Meego to throw itself at WinPho.
Alex Spektor, associate director at Strategy Analytics, put it into context. He said: “Microsoft smartphone shipments remain tiny, but they are showing tentative signs of growth.

"Nokia overtook HTC and others to become the world’s largest Microsoft smartphone vendor with 33 per cent market share."
Strategy Analytics said an increased retail presence and visible marketing campaigns across several European and Asian countries drove Nokia’s growth.
