IDC increases its outlook on the back of a higher than expected fourth quarter.
Overall global tablet shipments for 2011 reached 68.7 million, leading IDC to predict 87.7 million tablet shipments would take place this year.
However, having seen the success and of the Kindle Fire and clamour for the new iPad, the analyst has revised 2012 estimates to 106 million.
Meanwhile, tablet shipments hit 28.2 million in Q4 2011, a 56.1 per cent rise on Q3, and an impressive 155 per cent rise year-on-year.
Going forward IDC expects Android to increase its market share, passing Apple tablet shipments in 2015.
Additionally, e-reader shipments are thought to have hit 10.7 million units, rising by 64. 3 per cent year-on-year.
