Chinese website NetEase – via Kokatu – claims Apple will launch an iPad Mini in the third quarter to battle competition from Microsoft as the latter prepares to introduce the Windows 8 OS to tablets.
The Mini is expected to cost between $249 and $299 in a first for Apple, which prides itself on being the market leader with its high end iPads that are priced upwards of $400.
In addition to fending off Win 8, Apple will surely be looking to pummel the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet, which are also sub-$300.
The Cupertino firm is reported to be developing six million units for the initial launch.
But this is all pure speculation to be treated with scepticism. After all, how many times has Apple been on the verge of releasing an iPhone Nano?
