Sales are turned to ash, falling from 4.8m.
Market analyst IDC reports a dismal start to Q1 for Amazon, following an impressive debut in mid-Q4 when it became the world's number two tablet maker by securing 16.8 per cent of the market with the Kindle Fire.
The fall was likely due to its lack of international presence, as Amazon chose to release the tablet in the US only.
The drastic turnaround in sales performance allowed Samsung to overtake Amazon and push it into to third place, while Lenovo secured the fourth position, leaving Barnes & Noble in fifth.
Unsurprisingly, Apple continued to lead the market with the iPad. However, sales fell from 15.4 million in Q4 to 11.8 million, but it was still able to grow its market share from 54.7 per cent in 68 per cent as demand for Android tablets waned.
Meanwhile, total worldwide tablet shipments hit 17.4 million units in Q1, down 38.4 per cent from the record-breaking 28.2 million units in Q4.
