68700 - The Phone Home Number lets youngsters call home for free in an emergency.
As finger-wagging tabloids love to tell us, the age at which children are getting mobile phones is getting lower and lower.
However, even clever, mature, sensible adults run out of credit, so it's no surprise that youngsters do too and two thirds of all parents worry about their kids being unable to contact home in an emergency because they've run out of money.
Independent Radio News (IRN) is launching a new service called 68700 - The Phone Home Number which allows youngsters to call home for free with or without credit. Parents pay £3 per month on their telephone bill and their children then dial a single number 68700 for direct calls home. They also have the option of calling either their mum or dad in separated families.
Tim Molloy, managing director, IRN said: “Our research reveals running out of credit is a serious safety concern for both parents and their children. 68700 gives parents peace of mind their children can always call them in an emergency day or night, credit or no credit. It also encourages kids to stay in touch at other times since they are not paying for the call.”
Customers subscribe to the service by texting SAFE to 68700 for a fee of £3 a month. Customers can unsubscribe by texting STOP to 68700 at any time.
