A village in the Indian state of Bihar has banned women from using mobile phones and imposed heavy fines for those who do.
According to NDTV, elders of the village of Sunderbadi in the staunchly Islamic district of Kishanganj issued a number of edicts in order to implement social reforms.
These include banning women from using mobile phones or from bathing by the roadside. The fine for an unmarried woman caught using a mobile phone is 10,000 rupees, while a married woman faces a fine of 2,000 rupees. The fine for bathing by the roadside has not been publicised.
“Mobile phone is the cause of all evils in our society, including increasing love affairs and the incidents of elopement,” said Mohammad Manzoor Alam, who presided over the decisions.
