Nintendo plans to launch two big system updates for the Wii U and add a range of new features to Miiverse.
During its Nintendo Direct broadcast today, the format-holder outlined a range of new activity for the online service.
Two significant system updates are due - one in spring to fix software loading so games load faster, and one in the summer to improve speed of loading for the Wii U.
Elsewhere, Nintendo said it will also launch Miiverse smartphone functionality so users can read through the service's posts and content while on the go. Initially the experience will be browser-based, but Nintendo plans to create a dedicated Miiverse app in the future.
Smartphone web connection, activated with a Miiverse login, goes live in spring - Nintendo actually announced the apps at E3 last year, and said back then they would be for Android and iOS.
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said this phone functionality "expands the potential of Miiverse if you can access it while away from home"
Elsewhere, Nintendo said it would add two game-specific functions to Miiverse.
Wii Fit U Communities will let players create user communities on Miiverse from within the game. Community members can discuss exercises, BMI or weight changes and other health topics with other players as a way to encourage one another to reach their fitness goals. Similar functionality for other games is also planned.
Pikmin 3 Photos lets players use the Wii U GamePad as a camera to share the same perspective as Pikmin and take close-up pictures of landscapes and creatures in the game and share them in Miiverse.
