Social network app trumps maps service in new report.
The Facebook social networking app has beaten Google Maps to become the number one app in the US, according to a new report from comScore.
Using the comScore Mobile Metrix, apps were measured on their monthly unique visitors and user engagement.
Following its release last month, the Google Maps app proved to be particularly popular in the US. However, it subsequently dropped to second place in the rankings after Apple introduced its own maps service.
Andrew Lipsman, vice president of Marketing & Industry Analysis, at comScore, said: "Of course Apple's decision to replace Google Maps with Apple Maps on iOS 6 also caused a decline in Google Maps usage in October, which is largely responsible for the position swap. Meanwhile, Google Maps has been clawing its way back the past few months after getting reinstated on iOS 6, so look for the competition for the No. 1 spot to heat up as we head into 2013.”
While Google Maps may have lost out to Facebook overall, five of the top six apps in the chart came from Google, including Google Play, Google Search, Gmail and YouTube.
The report also found that Facebook made up 23 per cent of the time users spent on mobile apps.
