Call me a PC gamer with an axe to grind, but it appears the current console generation is once again limiting the potential of titles on the PC.
Visceral Games, the developer behind upcoming survival horror title Dead Space 3, has announced that the PC version will offer little graphical improvement over its console platforms.
The developer felt is was important to maintain a consistent gaming experience across all platforms, rather than harness the additional power available on today's high-end gaming PCs.
“[The PC version is] by no means any less important to us; it gets a lot of attention,” Steve Papoutsis told ShackNews. “The PC is a very different platform. As developers, you want to deliver an experience that's as similar as possible on different platforms.
“We continue to evolve our games as we develop them, but we certainly don't target PC as something that's going to be significantly different. We aren't trying to create disparity in the experience that our gamers enjoy; we want to make sure everyone's having that same experience.
"At our studio, we've always made console games. The biggest thing is we want to make sure the quality of the experience is consistent across all platforms so we don't have one userbase saying it's better on their system."
Of course, there are benefits to offering a similar experience across all of the title's platforms.
It limits the likelihood of a backlash of disgruntled console gamers, unnerved by the superiority of the PC version of the game as they are left with a technically inferior product.
Console gamers form a larger portion of the market, so it largely makes sense to keep them happy.
But still, it leaves PC gamers frustrated as developer's fail to push the platform to it's limits with its games as ailing console struggle to keep up.
