Know your roots: The history of consoles (1972-2006)

The Game Console provides a concise reference on the history of console video games from Magnavox's 1972 Odyssey all the way up to the recently launched Wii. Though not complete, photos of the hardware, retail boxes, controllers and game media do accompany the profiled systems. How can we know where we're going, if we don't know where we've been? Your 10,000 word essays are due Friday by 5pm EST.

I dabbled a little with the Atari 2600 as a toddler in the early 80's but I really got hooked with the NES.

The rest as they say, is history...

Its amazing how many consoles there were before my time. Its great to see how far we've come.

A very well done summary, with a surprising level of detail about Pong-era systems (I lived in this era and even I learned a few things). Great pictures of the systems as well.

Notable by their absence:

-Handhelds (though that would probably be another 16 pages!)

-Virtual Boy (though it's debatable if it was truly 'portable', but as far as self-contained systems go the Vectrex is also of the same ilk and it was mentioned)

-Phillips CD-I (and perhaps an essay on why consumers do not want to pay more than $500 for a console)

-Commodore Max, CDTV and CD32 (repeat essay about $500+ consoles, and perhaps mention the 3D0 and PS3 too :-)

-Atari 2600jr (the console that kept the 2600 in production until the early 90's. If you are going to mention the Sega Genesis, INTV, PS1, and PS2 redesigns then the 2600jr is worthy of a mention as well)
