Sony Rejects PS3 Price Cuts

Despite hopeful comments by analysts, Sony has gone on the record (again) saying that it has no plans to cut the PS3's pricetag any time soon. Next Generation reports:

"'PS3 prices and shipment plans for the future should be determined by market trends and competition. Sony currently doesn't have any specific plan to cut the PlayStation 3's price.' Analysts believe a price cut is inevitable, as the company struggles to catch Microsoft's early lead with Xbox 360, and the $250 Wii continues to sell as many as can be produced. However, Sony's plan has generally been to hold tight and hope that demand for Blu-ray drives will increase, by the end of this year."

Relatedly, the company has outlined releases for the second quarter of this year on the PS3, PS3, and PSP systems.

HAHA market trends... BS. If market trends were a factor Sony would sell PS3s for 400 USD to beat the $#@! out of the competition.

HD-DVD is failing! The amount of people uneducated to this fact is appalling. Blu-Ray sales have been a solid 3 to 1 vs HD-DVD.

This article is old but it explains the technical details of both formats as well companies who have sided with each format. Blu-Ray takes the cake on this one because its backed by huge movie studios and large scale game studios:

If one format wins, a number of experts predict it will be Blu-ray due to its higher number of manufacturing and content partners.

Forrester Research analyst Ted Schadler said in a research note on October 5, 2006, that Blu-ray will win out because it has more support, with over 100 manufacturers compared to HD DVD's 10. According to Schadler, Dell, Apple and Sony will ship PCs with Blu-ray drives. HD DVD has Toshiba in the PC fold. "This deeper support will translate into a broader assortment of products, more retail shelf space and a bigger marketing budget," he said, adding that the Playstation 3 will also make inroads for Blu-ray.

In fact, I am surprised, is seems 3:1 was old news... Now the BD vs HDDVD sales are a whopping 9:2

According to the report, Blu-ray outsold HD-DVD an impressive 9:2 while dominating the top sellers list. The only HD-DVD movie to even make an appearence on the list was "The Departed".

Sony's new release "Casino Royale" smashed all previous records by shipping 100,000 units to retail and also in the report Sony has 5 of the top 10 releases for the month of March.

According to the numbers from VideoScan, since its inception there have been 844,000 Blu-ray units sold, while there have been 708,600 units sold for HD-DVD.

However, there are some notes for the numbers. The VideoScan numbers do not include Wal-mart sales and most online merchants. There are also many more Blu-Ray players in use due to the amount of PlayStation 3's that have been sold.

Unless Micro$#@! forces HD-DVD on purchasers of the Xbox360 Elite and offers massive incentives for current owners to trade in their old 360 for a new one, HD-DVD will die out real quick...
