Default Retxturing tutorial Part 2. Dumping and loading.

Once you have configured your emulator, you can start with part 2. The fun part.

    Lets begin.

So in the setting option of project 64, it should be labeled like this. (you dont need to have the same plugins for sound and input).

Go to the emulators plugin folder
    program file>project64 1.6>plugins
and make a new folder in that called texture_dump

Ok, open up a game. For this tutorial I will use super mario 64.

The game should look like this.

Now go to option, configure graphics plugin, and go to the texture filter tab. Check the box were it says "dump textures to file"

    Replacing textures ingame.
When you click on dump textures to file, the game will dump all the textures thats load into the folder that you created earlier (texture_dump) located in the emulators plugin folder.

Note that textures do not dump until they are loaded. So when you enter a room, the game loads the textures for that room, if "dump textures to files" is enabled then it will dump the textures when they load.

Lets take a look at some dumped textures.

As you can see when you enabled "dump textures to file" it created a folder super mario 64 in the texture dump folder.

This is what it looks like inside that folder

You can see 5 folder in that. You can only retexture the textures in the last 3 folders. The first 2 folder are bitmap format so they are garbage. Note that some games only dumps textures in the last 2 folders (super mario 64).

    So lets begin retexturing.
Open the "png_all" folder. Inside that folder is all the textures that you have dumped. Find a texture that you want to retexture.

Im going to retexture that painting of peach.

I use photoshop but you can use other image editors.

    This is before

and this is after I retextured it. (you can make the resolution higher 4x to add more detail. If the original texture is 32x32, then you can make the image 128x128)

now save your texture in png format and MAKE SURE you dont change the original name.

Go to the emulators plugin folder again and this time make a new folder named hires_texture

Inside that folder make another folder named
SUPER MARIO 64 and put the saved texture into that folder.

Reset the emulator and check if your new texture is there.

    It should look like this

CONGRATULATIONS!! You have just retextured an n64 game.

Please post comments or if you need help.

I've got the texture dumping to work but the colours are off like when the offest is wrong on Tile Molester.
