ps3 CONFIRMED: $100 price drop on PlayStation3 on July 12 and 80GB in August

A PS3 price cut rumor spread like wildfire across the Internet this afternoon when several sites spotted a new advertisement from Circuit City. The ad as seen on Kotaku lists the PS3 console at $499.99, $100 less than its current price.

It wasn't clear at first if this ad was a special deal specific to the electronics retailer or if it's indeed a retail-wide price cut instituted by Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA). As it turns out, a merchandising manager (who wished to remain anonymous) at one of the world's biggest retailers has confirmed to GameDaily BIZ that the price drop is indeed retail-wide and it's scheduled to take place on July 12, although the first wave of ads to promote the PS3's new price won't kick in until Sunday, July 15.

Many analysts have speculated that Sony would drop the price on the expensive console this year, and some even predicted that it could happen this summer. It's starting to look like they were right. We're sure to find out much more next week when Sony holds its press conference at E3.

SCEA when contacted for confirmation declined to comment.

    **UPDATE**

Despite denials, Sony has made official the new $499 price point for the PlayStation 3 that we've started to see appear in retailers across the US. The 60GB model's new price point will indeed be $499, with a new 80GB model going on sale for $599 in the US and Canada in August. As a small bonus, the 80GB version will include a "free" copy of MotorStorm. So there ya' have it kids: in one quick swoop, Sony has made the PS3's price a whole lot more competitive.

Source or press release is to come. For now, source is from KOTV.

    **UPDATE #2**

Video of SCEA President & CEO Jack Tretton announcing the availability of a new 80GB PS3, and a price drop for the 60GB PS3.

I think it is only a rumor, cause SONY are denying it?

Actually, some sources who work for Best Buy, Target and other retailers have also confirmed the price drop. Of course Sony or any company will deny any rumors until the last minute.

Maybe it's not Sony who is dropping the price, maybe it's just the retailers cutting their profit margin to shift some stock? It wouldn't surprise me if they did.

But every single retailer? I highly doubt it. Not to mention every store taking a $100 loss? Retailers dont make much profit on systems. Why you think they force games and accessories down consumers throats? Thats where the bulk of profit comes from..hence the bundles.
