Microsoft will abandon Windows XP on April 8th, 2014, but Google has other plans.
In a blog post, Google said it recognises that ‘hundreds of millions of users’ still rely on XP – including a good chunk of Chrome users.
So, Google will provide Chrome browser updates for Windows XP users for at least a year after Microsoft stops its support for the operating system.
The blog points out that ‘many organisations still run dozens or even hundreds of applications on XP and may have trouble migrating’.
Microsoft has responded to the news, telling El Reg of the possible vulnerabilities that come with keeping XP after official support ends: "Third parties may provide ongoing support for their applications, but it’s important to recognise that support will not address fixes and security patches in the core Windows kernel so new vulnerabilities can still be exploited even though applications might be updated."
