General games Sony's Indian mythology MMO

    via Eurogamer

Sony Online Entertainment has teamed up with Virgin Comics to create a new massively-multiplayer online role-playing game.

It will be based on the popular Ramayan 3392 AD comic, which in turn takes its inspiration from an ancient Indian poem called the Ramayana.

This story written in Epic Sanskrit around 4th to 2nd Century BC has developed to become part of Hinduism. Those of that religion believe main character Rama is an incarnation of the deity Vishnu, and that his journey is a demonstration of the righteous path all should follow.

Science-fiction reinterpretation Ramayan 3392 AD isn't quite as revered, but is still applauded for its take on Indian lore, and what it represents for Indian youths across the world. Events take place in a post-apocalyptic world here, where Rama battles with his brothers to take down the demon-lord Ravan.

"In a world increasingly dominated with games influenced by a western Tolkien mythos, Ramayan will offer gamers a chance to experience a whole new universe of characters and archetypes derived from one of the oldest cultures on Earth," said Sharad Devarajan, big cheese at Virgin Comics.

"Our mission at Virgin Comics has always been to allow this generation of Indian youth to have a creative platform through which to speak to the world. Through this collaboration with the likeminded visionaries at SOE, our young Indian creators will make gaming history worldwide."

Sir Richard Branson's comic squad will be helping Sony Online Entertainment create the game for PC, although dates and details are yet to be divulged.

You'll know more when we do, though. Karma permits we tell you.

omg this is dumb, expect it to sell only 2 copies, if they are trying to target India, well India could barley afford things, espcially when they are priced at $600 in North America!

Trust me I know, my heritage is Indian, not Hindu though, but I do know alot about their culture.

The people who care about their religion enough to be buying games about are underneath the poverty line, those above are, well their just snooby rich kids. Hard to explain but thats how things go in India, you have to have ties their to realize this.
