ps3 Buffalo offers up external HD DVD / Blu-ray combo drive in Japan

    via engadget

Nah, Buffalo isn't manufacturing the HD DVD / Blu-ray drive that sits comfortably within its new external enclosure, but those parked in Japan can reportedly get ahold of this peace maker for just ¥51,000 ($440). Apparently, Buffalo chose the GGC-H20N optical drive to read both high-definition formats in its BHC-6316U2, and CyberLink's PowerDVD7.3 Ultra will also be thrown in for good measure. Next month, Buffalo will be loosing the BRHC-6316U2, which will utilize the GGW-H20N Blu-ray burner / HD DVD reader and will run customers a respectable ¥74,800 ($644).

No. And why would you want HD DVDs on a PS3?

Flexibility? Futureproofing? Say, if bluRay loses the format war or something.

I think he was wondering because this is in the PS3 news forum. I suppose Blu-Ray is important to PS3 owners as well, making it newsworthy in this forum.

And besides I find the Blu-Ray burner aspect interesting, even though I cannot imagine many uses for it.

Well maybe a Linux LIVE Blu-Ray disc packed to the brim with games and emulators.

Is it me or do the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray logos look to be really badly stuck on? Some one has NO photoshop skills whatsoever or Buffalo are using a half-arsed ad agency.

    Interesting though.

    To answer a few questions:

USB can be fast enough, what do you think the 360 HD DVD drive runs through?

    2. Why buy this for your PS3 of you are worryed about Blu Ray losing? I heard through linux people have ran their Xbox 360 drive on their PS3s. Besides the 360 drive will be way cheaper then this.
