Due to “regulatory hurdles”, the Steam Machine beta testing is limited to US residents only.
Valve has announced that 300 selected Steam Machine beta testers will be notified today. The original plan was for all customers worldwide to be in with a chance of getting one, saying that to include anyone from outside the US would delay the whole project.
The decision only affects the 300 prototypes Steam Machines and not the commercial versions which are due to go on sale in 2014.
Those lucky enough to be selected will also receive the Steam haptic feedback controller.
Valve has also revealed that SteamOS will be available from tomorrow (Friday 13th), although the firm warns that “unless you’re an intrepid Linux hacker already, we’re going to recommend that you wait until later in 2014 to try it out.”
