Expect more content before any price cut, says Hirai

Sony is to increase its marketing push for the PlayStation 3 this Christmas by putting particular emphasis on the console's capacity as a Blu-ray movie player.

Working closely with Sony Pictures and Sony Entertainment, SCE president Kaz Hirai admitted it was a "balancing act" to market the GBP 425 machine as both a games player and a home entertainment system.

"The PS3 is first and foremost a videogames machine but we want to say – by the way, it's a great Blu-ray player as well," said Hirai, speaking to the FT.com.

And reiterating his comments in yesterday's keynote speech at the Tokyo Game Show, Hirai said that there are no further price cuts planned for the console until it has the right content to back up sales.

"Going aggressive only on price without being able to back it up with content doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me," he said.
