ps3 Sony's PS3 sales in US more than double since price cut

A few of our readers were scoffing at the idea of a $399 40GB PS3. "What's the big deal," you said. This: according to Sony's CEO, Sir Howard Stringer, they've more than doubled sales in the US in the weeks since its launch. "It's the breakthrough we've been waiting for," said Stringer, "We've been holding our breath. Finally, the turning point has been passed." Prior to the October 18th price cut, Sony was selling just 30k to 40k consoles per week. Sales rose to 75,000 in the week ending October 29 rising to 100,000 the following week. Stringer also credits Wii shortages for helping the boost. Andrew House, Sony's chief marketing officer even takes a jab at HD DVD saying, "It puts us vastly ahead of where the other format is going to be in terms of an installed base in people's homes by the end of this holiday season." Perhaps, but we don't expect the boys at Microsoft, Nintendo, and Toshiba to just roll over and let this progress continue unabated now, do we?

This is all very good but Sony need to get some 'killer' games out to consolidate this growth. The PS2 got away with about 12 months with barely any games up to the quality of the best PS1 games but the PS3 is not finding things so easy.

Will another (probably very high quality) Metal Gear and Gran Turismo installment be enough, or do Sony need to create some new games franchises?

Known titles have long driven game and console sales very well, but some killer new franchises will become more and more necessary. Old franchises are great for its diehard fans and getting new players into the franchise, but I know as far as I am concerned, new franchises matter just as much.

Me too. I am a fairly disgruntled XBox 360 owner but I am not yet convinced that switching to the PS3 would be a good move. The PS3 has Oblivion, the only 360 game I rate highly, but the cost involved to switch just play the game on a different (less noisy, less likely to freeze) console does not justify the change yet. Also, XBox live arcade is quite good.

If something amazing A++ were to come out for the PS3 that wasn't a FPS or driving game then I would probably get rid of my XBox, but I do not think another installment of an existing Sony classic franchise would be enough.

For example, if there was some kind of game like Elite but with PS3 graphics and an online universe I would be straight down to my local Game.

Sony has LittleBigPlanet coming out next year which I think will get a lot of people interested in PS3
