Star Trek MMO, Star Trek Online, has apparently switched target audience following the acquisition of the property by what's reportedly a media company looking to break into videogames.

This follows the liquidation of the assets of the game's developer Perpetual Entertainment in October, according to ShackNews.

Says the site, a well-placed source has informed it that "Along with the acquisition comes a partial retargeting of Star Trek Online to what our source describes as a 'more casual' experience".

It's speculated this could mean that the unknown company now in charge of Star Trek Online could opt for a micro-transaction model for the game rather than use the traditional monthly subscription method.

Wonder how much the USS Enterprise would cost...
