The furore around Flappy Bird – a game which just last week was generating $50,000 in ad revenue a day – has taken yet another turn.
No, it isn't back on the App Store or Google Play following creator Dong Nguyen's decision to pull the plug, instead, the Vietnamese developer has been thrown into a twisted internet hoax suggesting he's committed suicide, reportsHollywood Life.
The story goes as follows:
"Flappy Bird developer Dong Nguyen has just been found dead in his home with a gunshot wound in his dead. Authorities are confirming that Nguyen committed suicide by shooting himself in the head with a pistol. Authorities are saying that the sensational game Flappy Bird had something to do with the suicide.
"There has also been 7 reports of other suicides around the U.S. today alone. Flappy Bird developer Dong Nguyen has taken Flappy Bird off app stores this morning and is believed to be the cause of the suicides."
Fans of the game have been seen on Twitter sharing and favouriting the story, while trolls have been throwing abuse and death threats at Nguyen, which is likely where the suicide story originates from.
Since announcing the game's extermination on Twitter, Nguyen has maintained a social media silence despite being inundated with mentions and seeing followers surge to 150,000.
